TOUGH question for the EXPERTS
Posted by Gavinvvi on August 23, 2005 at 2:17 pmDo you guys have any ideas on how to batch export a group of clips digitized at 720×486 to the DV format at 720×480 while maintaining the proper pixel aspect ratio? I can export one clip at a time (in fact, it even asks “should I maintain proper pixel aspect ratio?” and looks GREAT. But when I batch export, it doesn’t do the proper pixel aspect ratio conversion.
Ideas anyone? I’m open to anything to speed this process up! 🙂

August 23, 2005 at 2:29 pm1) Do they have to remain seperate clips? I’d drop them all on a a DV timeline and make sure that the ratio is correct and it’s positoned right (in other words, you’re cropping 4 pixels off the top and 4 off the bottom). Then, just export one long clip from that. Will that work?
2) If you have Tiger and you can figure out how to make this conversion with Quicktime you might be able to set up an automator action that does it for you.
I know those don’t really help that much, but they’re directions to explore, at least.

August 23, 2005 at 2:31 pmWhat does it actually do on batch export? The pixel aspect ratios should be identical.

August 23, 2005 at 2:40 pmWhen you convert from CCIR to DV the fields get “mushed” together unless you do a CCIR to DV transcoding. Final Cut Pro 4.5 asks you if you want to transcode only during a single clip’s export. As far as I’ve seen, you cannot batch export AND correctly transcode multiple clips.
I would like to know if there is a way to do a multiple clip export/transcode while maintaining all timecode and etc. This would be a huge timesaver.
(The reason we do this is we digitize uncompressed 720×486 from a beta deck through component lines and convert the footage to DV for our other non-uncompressed workstation to edit with.)

August 23, 2005 at 3:23 pmEdit the clips to a DV timeline. Make sure field order is right and everything. Drag clips from timeline to the batch exporter, hit export with the DV settings of the timeline. I think that might work.

August 23, 2005 at 4:13 pmI’ve also had some luck doing this in Compressor. Set the “crop” to 2 pixels off the top and 4 pixels off the bottom. Set the Frame Size to “100% of source.” Make sure to test on some short clips with lots of motion and look at the results on an NTSC (or PAL) monitor.
