John, can you please share the settings that make this possible? I had tried several different device control settings with no luck. Is it something else?

    Thanks-

    [santellavision] “I’m confused.

I’ll see if I can say this a little clearer:
    >>You posted that AJA said you cannot get TC over HD-SDI?
REPLY- AJA said FCP cannot read TC over HD-SDI. Their application “Kona VTRXchange” CAN read and write the Timecode into a Quicktime file when captured.

    >>Or are you saying you cannot get TC over HD-SDI, just out of your HDX900 playback?
REPLY-I believe you can get TC over HD-SDI, I have not tried it. FCP will not be able to read it though.

    >>I am looking at getting a 1400 deck for my FCP w/Kona3. Is anyone getting TC over HD-SDI out of a 1400?
REPLY- I have the same setup. Use the RS-422 connector on the deck and Kona to handle deck control and timecode. I only tried to get TC over HD-SDI because the camera does not have RS-422 (obviously)

Hopefully that helps? Let me know if I can clear it up any more.

Looks like I responed too quickly about FCP and HD-SDI. While I was able to get the Kona VTRXchange program to accept the HD-SDI embedded TC (after selecting it in the Preference pane), I was not able to get FCP to understand the TC coming in via HD-SDI. I talked with an AJA support tech and he confirmed that FCP does not understand TC from HD-SDI.

I was able to get Timecode, audio and HD video to come over one firewire cable. Unfortunately that was from the DVCProHD deck, and not the camera, so we will go with the trusty IoLD for capture.

I really hope to see FCP updated to allow TC to be selected from HD-SDI soon because this would be a killer feature to use with the IoHD: Audio, ProResHD video and Timecode all over 1 cable in the field….

John, thanks for your post. Last night it clicked which FCP setting I needed to change to get FCP to read the LTC over Firewire. When I went to test it on the camera this morning however, the Timecode from the HDX900 appears in FCP for the first several frames but then it stops. Is there a setting on the HDX900 that will output LTC consistently over Firewire?

    Getting closer….

[john sharaf] “TC is definitely embedded in the HD-SDI signal, as it is in the Firewire, but your FCP must be set to understand it. It believe your issue is a FCP setting.”

Can the Firewire be activated on record? I am under the impression it only works on tape playback. Can I use that as a realtime output?

Glad to hear TC comes out over HD-SDI, I have only looked at the SD-SDI output so far.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

August 31, 2007 at 3:37 pm in reply to: Downconvert options?

“Why not do they downconvert via the Kona card and not the deck.”

That was what I was doing originally. I switched to take advantage of the SDI signal path going to the HD deck (which only records HD signals AFAIK) rather than out through a converter and then to a different deck via component.

Now that I’ve got some time to dissect what happened, it might have just been a particularly problematic logo. The client recently redesigned it and it has 3 very thin lines outlining an oval. I was going from 720p to 525i. When I re-rendered with fields, it looked much cleaner.

I’ve decided to edit with an SD monitor on at all times now so I can catch these things earlier, instead of when I need to get something out in 15 minutes!

Forgot to add that these commercials get delivered via FastChannel as MPEG-2 files, so that is why I need to re-digitize them. If I were doing beta dub masters, I would just use the Kona downconvert output to the Beta deck.

    Thanks-

I thought I had tried that option and it didn’t fix my issue. I guess I’ll have to take a look at it again!

THe short answer is to let Final Cut Pro do the YUV to RGB conversion: rener out an Animation codec clip and bring that in to AE. Also, Uncompressed seems to work fine in AE.

The problem lies in Quicktime (and may be fixed in 7.2, but I have yet to unleash that on my system…)

August 28, 2007 at 4:02 pm in reply to: AE CS3 for Mac Very Long Time to Quit

Having the same issue here on a dual quad core with 9 GB RAM.

I have been watching the Activity Monitor when I quit and you can see it close all the instances of AE very slowly. Sometimes, the other instances seem to hang and keep using 100%+ of CPU.

Earlier today I tried turning off the render multiple frames option in the preferences and it quits much quicker (about 3 seconds). I’ve also noticed my computer feels much snappier. I’m not memory expert, but I noticed I was having hundreds of millions (litterally) of Page outs of memory. Since I turned off multiple frame render I’ve had 0.

    Any comments?
