  • HDX 900 timecode out over HD-SDI?

Posted by Matt Larson on September 17, 2007 at 9:10 pm

Can anyone tell me for sure if the HDX900 embeds RP-188 timecode over HD-SDI?

I was not able to get it to output TC over SD-SDI, and after looking through the manual it looks like that is not an option. Is there anything I’m missing?

I’m looking to do a direct capture from either the SD or HD output of the camera into Final Cut Pro and I would like to get timecode to be included with the audio and video. I tried getting the SD signal into FCP using an AJA IoLD which worked except for the Timecode info. The next step is to try it with an AJA IoHD, which I assume will work great, once it’s released.

Any other ways to go about this? I also wondered about converting the BNC timecode out to RS-422. Thanks-

TC is definitely embedded in the HD-SDI signal, as it is in the Firewire, but your FCP must be set to understand it. It believe your issue is a FCP setting.

Can the Firewire be activated on record? I am under the impression it only works on tape playback. Can I use that as a realtime output?

Glad to hear TC comes out over HD-SDI, I have only looked at the SD-SDI output so far.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

John, thanks for your post. Last night it clicked which FCP setting I needed to change to get FCP to read the LTC over Firewire. When I went to test it on the camera this morning however, the Timecode from the HDX900 appears in FCP for the first several frames but then it stops. Is there a setting on the HDX900 that will output LTC consistently over Firewire?

    Getting closer….

    Matt,

Can you post what you did to change the settings for FCP to accept TC over HD-SDI? (At least up to this point)

    Thanks!

Looks like I responed too quickly about FCP and HD-SDI. While I was able to get the Kona VTRXchange program to accept the HD-SDI embedded TC (after selecting it in the Preference pane), I was not able to get FCP to understand the TC coming in via HD-SDI. I talked with an AJA support tech and he confirmed that FCP does not understand TC from HD-SDI.

I was able to get Timecode, audio and HD video to come over one firewire cable. Unfortunately that was from the DVCProHD deck, and not the camera, so we will go with the trusty IoLD for capture.

I really hope to see FCP updated to allow TC to be selected from HD-SDI soon because this would be a killer feature to use with the IoHD: Audio, ProResHD video and Timecode all over 1 cable in the field….

I’m confused. You posted that AJA said you cannot get TC over HD-SDI?

Or are you saying you cannot get TC over HD-SDI, just out of your HDX900 playback?

I am looking at getting a 1400 deck for my FCP w/Kona3. Is anyone getting TC over HD-SDI out of a 1400?

TC out of 1200A/1400 HD-SDI through Kona to FCP – no problem!

    [santellavision] “I’m confused.

I’ll see if I can say this a little clearer:
    >>You posted that AJA said you cannot get TC over HD-SDI?
REPLY- AJA said FCP cannot read TC over HD-SDI. Their application “Kona VTRXchange” CAN read and write the Timecode into a Quicktime file when captured.

    >>Or are you saying you cannot get TC over HD-SDI, just out of your HDX900 playback?
REPLY-I believe you can get TC over HD-SDI, I have not tried it. FCP will not be able to read it though.

    >>I am looking at getting a 1400 deck for my FCP w/Kona3. Is anyone getting TC over HD-SDI out of a 1400?
REPLY- I have the same setup. Use the RS-422 connector on the deck and Kona to handle deck control and timecode. I only tried to get TC over HD-SDI because the camera does not have RS-422 (obviously)

Hopefully that helps? Let me know if I can clear it up any more.

John, can you please share the settings that make this possible? I had tried several different device control settings with no luck. Is it something else?

    Thanks-

    Matt,

Maybe it’s that the TC is coming in via the RS232 connector? I’m sure AJA Tech Support could clarify this.
