Personally the top of my list to buy is the Alphatron viewfinder, the Tokina 11-16 Version 2 (will be pre-ordering this as well), and a solid audio solution, probably a Sound Devices mixer. For my own work I’ve been very happy with my Manfrotto 504HD and it can definitely handle the BMCC so I’m set for tripod support. I will probably hold off on cages and hand held support beyond the handles for a while as I am more of a tripod shooter anyway. Also, I know that more and more companies will be coming out with accessories through the year so when it comes to camera specific gear like that, I will want to wait to see what Zacuto and Redrock Micro will have to offer. I also will need to be buying my SSDs which I have not done yet so that will be a hefty cost as well that I will need to factor in. The one camera specific thing that I will be getting early on will be a battery solution. There is the Switronix option but I also will want to see what other companies will come out with. I have been checking Hot Rod Cameras to see if they have announced their battery solution but still nothing. Would love to hear what people are planning as far as power is concerned.

Yup, I ordered the handles also. I’m hoping that when/if BMD start to release further accessories than the handles will be integrated as part of their ideas. I.E., a specifically designed LANC controller that attaches to them.

And I agree with you about the shape of the camera. It definitely lends itself to some clever use of old DSLR rigs and if one were feeling handy, and had the machinery, to building ones own cages and rigs from scratch.

As for the Hyperdeck in a CC workflow, I have been hearing some people saying that it could be used as a redundant recording mechanism due to the SDI out on the BMCC. It won’t record the 2.5K since the SDI only carries 1080, but especially if you will be working with the ProRes or DNxHD options, then it can be a really nice way to go in terms of redundant copies, especially if you don’t trust SSD’s quite yet. You could also have a ProRes or DNxHD recording going simultaneously while the camera is recording uncompressed 2.5K and you will then have some more edit friendly files than the CinemaDNG which you can reconnect to later for your color grade.

Hi Eric,

I spoke to Dan May at the New York meet up and he said that the recording mechanisms are more or less a Hyperdeck Shuttle and as such, the approved SSDs for the Hyperdeck should have no problem with the BMCC.

I did not order at NAB unfortunately. Wasn’t there. I pre-ordered the first week that B&H had it available. I think it was April 30th that I actually submitted it. It is good that your were able to pre-order though as I suspect that will be the only way to get a camera for several months. And look on the bright side, we early adopters won’t even have audio meters on our cameras (coming in a future firmware update). You get to let us figure out all the problems first.

B&H last night extended their expected availability date from July 30th to August 15th. I have my fingers crossed that this date is more accurate to when a customer can get one (who’s on a pre-order list, which I have been since April) as opposed to when they might be technically available in terms of having shipped out of Australia but not yet in the hands of a dealer.

It is also an excellent monitor and may wind up being more bang for your buck at 1920×1200 and 24″. It is also $250 less than the Flanders.

So are you using Auto Focus? This could be the camera’s sensors getting a little confused at what the intended subject is. How close is the intended subject? If it is very close to the camera then it may be too close in a way and could require manual focus, otherwise the camera itself will continuously switch between focal points.

I came across this thread on the Cow and I think it will help. Also, the adobe page linked within could be very helpful as well. Basically the general idea I gather is to render out your clips in SpeedGrade and then use the Replace Footage function in Premiere Pro to reconnect your clips to the graded media. Hope this helps!

I haven’t really jumped into SpeedGrade yet so I’m not sure but perhaps either an EDL or XML file exchange? Export it out of SpeedGrade and import into Premiere.

Honestly, sign up for a year of Creative Cloud and you will be able to download on both systems and use them both for whatever advantages you may find. You will also be able to download any of the other Creative Suite applications.

You can have two active licenses of any Adobe software on either Mac or PC if you use Creative Cloud. It’s also much cheaper than buying a boxed version. But the drawback is that you will eventually decide to renew your software or not. But at the price, you can renew three years of Creative Cloud before paying for a full boxed Production Premium and you will always have the most up to date software.
