    Hi Peter,
I don’t think the 2700 is a very good 2nd generation Varicam in PAL mode. It only shoots down to to 50fps, whereas the old Varicam could do 60fps in PAL. The 2700 records a frame size smaller in PAL than it does in NTSC mode, in comparison with a 2100 it really only has the gamma curve in it’s favour. I can’t help but feel that Panasonic is dudding us PAL users with the 2700. Go back to the drawing board and give us back those 10 extra frames please.
    Matthew.

    Are you shooting AVC Intra?

    Hi Peter,
Is your Mac laptop an Air or an iBook?
Have you considered the Panasonic AJ-PCD 10 (usb support)? There may be some cheap ones around because people wanted the FW800 support instead.

September 25, 2008 at 10:38 pm in reply to: HVX 720p/25pn to betacam ?

    Hi David,
Firstly, where are you, which PAL region?
Is it Betacam, Betacam SP, Digital Betacam, or Betacam IMX?
Do you have access to a firewire to SDI converter? These can be rented from many places around the world, assuming you have firewire bus on the machine you cut with. You can then rent, borrow an appropriate VTR to master to. (I’m assuming that you don’t have a video card with SDI, Component output.)
Another option that might be easier, is contact your local dub house and see if they can take .mov files, or like, and they can dub for you. More and more dub houses are receiving masters on drives and dubbing to the required format.
Also, have you checked with the local station to see if they take file based delivery? Most TVC’s in Australia are delivered this way.

What are your real time settings in FCP?
By crispness do you mean sharp?
Does the footage need rendering of any kind when played back on the time line, what colour is the real time indicator line above the video tracks?
What happens if you force FCP to set a new sequence as 60fps rather than letting it make the settings for you?
    Matthew.

  • Is this something that only exists in NTSC?
I shoot 25p for 50i playback all the time and never see the combing issue that is on Jason’s footage.

September 23, 2008 at 10:45 am in reply to: Missing folders?

Have you tried using “Log and Transfer” and directing the finder to the files on the hard drive?
Are the files shot AVC Intra 50/100?
If you are trying to import directly into the browser window with out using the log and transfer action, then you will need to use an MXF-QT re-wrapper, like MXF4QT, or Raylight.
Search the web for demo versions, give it a go and see which way you would like to proceed. Log and transfer is part of FCP but you will have to pay to get the others.
You will need to create the missing folders on the drive so FCP can recognise the file structure. Last clip is not required for this.

Did you get a look with a CRT?

  • If you are delivering in SD and letterboxing your HD image into this, why not shoot SD PRO-50 16×9?
It’ll process easier, won’t need as much scaling down as from 720pHD, and allow external monitoring (if you have any) with out the need for rendering. Just remember to activate the anamorphic tab on your imported footage.

  • Internally as far as vision processing goes it’s practically the same as a HVX 200/202.
You can think of it as an HVX with a professional body, switch gear, and 2/3″ chips.
The larger size chips bring with the advantages of better depth of field control, more active pixels, and better pixel registry so things like CCD smear are not as great a problem as in 1/2″ or 1/3″ cameras.
At the end of the day your EX-1 is using more pixels to create 1080 than the HVX 500, but that has never been the only consideration for what is a better camera.
