Making DVCPRO50 30p look better
I recently shot some DVCPRO50 footage at 30p without thinking about the fact that I would actually be getting 60i via some funky pulldown. Anyway, I’m not happy with the stairstepping artifacts. Is there any way to remove pulldown and get to something that looks better? I’m using FCP.

There is no pulldown. 30p is basically 30fps but with both fields being the same image, instead of two interlaced fields with slightly different information.
Pulldown only refers to 24P and 24PA (24PN) footage.

There’s no pulldown. 30p fits into 60i directly 1:1. Perhaps you have an issue with sequence settings in your NLE. More details please. 🙂

That’s what I thought too, until I tried playing the footage directly from the camera to the BT-LH1700W. It looks bad right out of the camera. It’s very similar to when I shot some DVCPRO50 24p. In that case the camera adds pulldown to get to 29.97. I’m uploading an MXF right now so you can see it for yourself.

Here’s an MXF file if someone wants to throw it on the timeline and see what I’m talking about (nasty stairstepping). I hope I’m wrong and it’s just operator error…

Well, I can’t open it. The Avid software on my end might be interfering.
Oh, lemme try opening this in Avid…Nope…can’t do it either.

How do you normally work with MXF files?

WIth FCP, I use LOG AND TRANSFER to convert them to Quicktime. Although I have used Raylight in a pinch. But now I am playing with HDLOG, as it creates small QT ref files that allow you to read the MXF files, tying audio and video.
With Avid, I use the Import P2 option, that reads the files natively and makes clips that ties audio and video.
In both cases, I keep the original file structure intact. Now, when I had P2CMS installed, I could open the MXF files in QT, but when I installed Avid, that ability went away. Some thing conflicting.

I can’t read the file, even when it is placed in a correct file structure. Can anyone else read the file?

The file looks beautiful here. You must have the wrong settings somewhere.

Thanks for taking a look at it Jeremy. You don’t see the aliasing on the horizontal lines of the building during the pan? Did you play it in FCP?
