Making DVCPRO50 30p look better

Are you seeing the artefact on both the canvas window and preview monitor? If you are using a video card to preview, which one are you using?
It’s odd that we can see the footage cleanly, yet there still seems to be an issue with field dominance in the system you are using.
Generally it’s the last resort of “I dunno what the problem is…”, but have you trashed the preferences and restarted FCP? -

Now that you mention it, after changing the clip and sequence field dominance settings to “none”, the video in the viewer and the canvas looks perfect. But, the video being output via Kona LHe SDI does not change. It still displays the aliasing problems. This leads me to believe that the problem lies with the Kona. I may have to take this up in the Kona forum. Thanks so much for your troubleshooting help!

Just a thought, turn your rt playback to ‘High’ in your sequence from the rt drop down menu.

Hi Jason,
Check the View options in FCP and see if there are any Psf output options (progressive segmented filed).
I have an AJA IO and in an earlier release if drivers I had to use these settings to view progressive PAL video. An update of firmware a while ago changed this. -
I don’t see any PSF options.

After spending 2 plus days on this “problem” the only conclusion I can come to is that DVCPRO50 30p is, by it’s very nature, going to have UGLY aliasing in some scenes. On with the edit! Thanks much to Jeremy and Matthew and others that took time to help out. You guys put the “MOO” in the cow!

Boy, its unfortunate that you have come to this conclusion, we have a major client that shoot DVCPRO50 30p all the time, and it looks great. we’ve been editing their stuff for years. Now, the main difference is that they are shooting to tape via the sdx900. we load it over firewire (with 422 control, of course, FW control drives me nuts!) And I have a Kona LH card as well. I know my kona card can get pissy when changing output formats from an HD project to a SD project, and I have to go and reset the card through the control panel. But if I’m not mistaken, the output controls in FCP (option+apple+Q) remotley control the Kona card as well, essentially using the FCP controls instead of having to go to the Kona control panel. Sometimes this doesn’t work on my system, and I have to go back and forth until it gets straightened out.
The one thing that DOES bother me though, is that you said that it looks perfect on your FCP viewer window, just not on output. Doesn’t that tell you that there is an output problem somewhere? Is your card upressing the SDI output? If so, that will make it look crappy. Can you export a QT, burn it to dvd then play it back on a settop box, what does it look like then? A few more steps of troubleshooting should find the problem. I have a hard time believing the issue is with the compression scheme. What is your final destination? Output via SDI, DVD?
Also, we use that monitor as a feild shooting monitor, and it looks like crap when you send sd footage into it. We use out HPX2000 via SDI into it, and people ask if there is something wrong with it! That monitor doesn’t do a good job of upressing sd footage. It should have a pixel to pixel option, then it would be useable with sd footage. We only shoot HD now, so we don’t have to worry about it.
