Yeah I totally agree. I need a better computer (I’m cutting on an old server my work gave me and a bare bones laptop computer eeek!). I’m on such a tight budget it’s embarrassing to admit. However, I’ve found I can limp by quite well as long as the files are in a format with relatively low compression such as avi.

Are you guys developers? I’ve got a lot of excellent help from you all if you were local I’d make sure to get you a beer sometime!

Greatly appreciated. I dove into this project head first. I didn’t know much, started with the trial of platinum then bought the full platinum suite.

Now that I’ve learned a lot more I realize I really needed to get the Pro. I think I’m going to have to bite the bullet and buy it despite my previous purchase. I did a LOT of multi-cam and have hundreds of clips to manage.

My only question is, I’m thinking I should have probably got the Adobe suite. I’d like to do after effects like renders. Is there a similar product offered by Sony? I actually do love how simple Sony’s software is to use and it runs very well on my machine despite I have a cheap-o computer.

Do you have to have pro to do that? Or is there a way to do it in the Platinum version? The more I learn the more I wish I had bought pro 🙁

I have 10. It opens them fine but they are so highly compressed that it doesn’t work well with them.

I suggest finding a converter and making them a wmv or avi. Something more manageable to work with. I think there’s software out there thought that will convert to a different format on its own. I just re-render as vegas 10 supports most formats but performance isn’t the best when cutting them.

My two cents… I don’t think supporting so many different formats directly in timeline is the best approach. I’ve seen things glitch in 10 not to mention it bogs the computer down dramatically. Although I must say it is nice to be able to bring them in. Just wish it had option to standardize them all to a single easy to use format.

For the Microsoft Capture Codec I’m sure my lingo is a little twisted up. When you launch the Sony Vegas Capture Video Dialog 6.0 (DV) under the video menu there’s a list of cameras to select from. One of the options (this if off the top of my head) is something to the effect of “Microsoft IEEE firewire …”.

I guess I just assumed that Microsoft was running the show when I saw that. Perhaps they’re just telling Vegas how to talk over the firewire line. No biggie. I think you guys set me straight 🙂 Greatly appreciated!

On a side note, what do you guys recommend I do to get better at video production (from shooting to editing and producing?) I currently got into this to launch a business that develops video training programs for small businesses and automates their fulfillment. Here’s a few things I’ve done so far…

– I’m taking classes at the local community college
– Searched google (of course 🙂 )
– Went through FASST start guide for Sony Vegas (great job btw!!!)
– Networked with a few pros in the industry to ask questions of

I am currently broke as a joke but are there some books or further training DVD(s) you guys would recommend?

Sorry in advance for my novice. I’m relatively new to this but taking classes in it and reading up as much as possible. I really appreciate all the fantastic feedback / responses on here.

I had thought it seemed a bit odd for the VX2100 to support HDV. I had previously read the manual nearly from front to back and it made no mention of HDV.

So is DV still a direct bit for bit copy as well or does it do some sort of actual analog to digital conversion while it’s captured?

I’m not running any firewall (windows firewall is turned off). Here’s my setup:

– windows vista (32bit)
– sony vegas movie studio hd platinum 10 (wish I had gotten pro 🙁 ).
– Computer is fast enough to capture w/o ever dropping frames.

I have the video on the camera set as follows:

– Record in 16:9 wide (I believe that’s 720×480)
– VCR Set to A/V->DV OUT enabled

Within Sony Vegas if I select HD capture it launches sony video capture 6.0 detects the camera and captures video through the firewire connection.

Everything captures fine but it always looks substandard. When I view captures from my friends computer (same camera) they look much better.

If I try to launch the HDV application in sony vegas, the app launches fine. It sees my firewire port, but won’t detect any camera.

Does the camera really support HDV capture mode?

I’ve been unable to get sony vegas to do a HDV capture. It seems when I plug the camera in to the firewire port and try HDV capture it won’t detect the camera.

Kind of at a loss. Thanks much for the help. Google isn’t really uncovering much for me.

No it sees them fine it’s just that my computer struggles with that particular format. It really boggs down the processor and cutting them is choppy at best. So they’re virtually impossible to work with.

I’m curious about converting them to a different format and or down sampling them. This is a fairly common issue and Final Cut Pro (I’m taking classes in it), has a feature to down res while you’re editing in the timeline. Then when you’re ready to render it uses the full quality clip.

I’m curious if Sony Vegas has such a feature. Or if I’m forced to manually convert every video clip back and forth so I can cut them.
