Work Flow for Large Project
My project is a documentary. I’ve asked a few questions and greatly appreciate help you guys have given me. I have a new question now. My documentary is turning into a massive project with around an hour on the timeline plus several extra feature sections on the DVD.
To manage it I’ve created subprojects broken into scene and then section. Each scene has several folders with the sections it contains. Each section is a project which then is rendered and imported as a video clip into the respective scene.
So basically two layers, scenes and sections. Here’s what I’m curious about. Is there a way to simply have a master project and import the smaller projects or partition a single project in a similar fashion so it’s still manageable?

Yes, it’s called nested projects and all you have to do is drop your project .veg file from the scenes into your master project and Vegas Pro will treat them just like a rendered piece of media so there is no need to do the interim renders that you’re doing now. Just drag and drop… it’s that simple.

Do you have to have pro to do that? Or is there a way to do it in the Platinum version? The more I learn the more I wish I had bought pro 🙁

You need the Pro version for nested projects. Sorry, when you said that you were making a documentary, I assumed that you were not using the consumer Movie Studio version of Vegas. Your only option is to render like you have been doing.

Greatly appreciated. I dove into this project head first. I didn’t know much, started with the trial of platinum then bought the full platinum suite.
Now that I’ve learned a lot more I realize I really needed to get the Pro. I think I’m going to have to bite the bullet and buy it despite my previous purchase. I did a LOT of multi-cam and have hundreds of clips to manage.
My only question is, I’m thinking I should have probably got the Adobe suite. I’d like to do after effects like renders. Is there a similar product offered by Sony? I actually do love how simple Sony’s software is to use and it runs very well on my machine despite I have a cheap-o computer.

If you upgrade to Pro you get a discount for buying Movie Studio so it wasn’t all wasted. Pro has multi-cam capabilities built in and there are several productivity script plug-ins that do multi-cam and a lot of other things.

What were you panning to use from After Effects? Boris Continuum Complete 7 (BCC7) for Vegas Pro 10 gives you a lot of capabilities just like After Effects and even some AE doesn’t have like real 3D text. Vegas Pro itself has a lot of functionality like AE with it’s 3D Track Motion. I have AE CS5 but I rarely use it now that I have BCC7.

Hey greatly appreciated! I just purchased Sony Vegas Pro along with the seminar series tutorials.
I’ve been very happy with the tool-set. Will have to look into Boris, if Pro won’t do what I’m looking for. I have some visuals of the foot I need to do some sort of graphical motion overlay on. I may be able to limp buy with just pro for now.
I could defiantly see effects coming in handy in the future though so it’s nice to know the Sony platform has a solution like AE.
