Hello Paul
I know AJA would not advise this, it might even void the warranty.
I do also know that performance with off the shelf drives is very hot and miss. All AJA drives are tested for performance from 0-100% to ensure no dropped frames. Also the casing and drive connection is industrial and designed for continual insertion through the lifetime of the product.
If you are looking for faster data transfer than the FW800 on the KiStor drive maybe the KiStor Dock (USB3 & Thunderbolt) or KiStor USB 3.0 Hard Drive Storage Module might be of interest?:

Or to save higher shipping costs and potential import taxes you could arrange for an advanced replacement via your dealer arranged from the distributor in Germany.

Hello Tawfiq
The KiPro records only ProRes as a format. This has several flavours and things like frames rates and audio will affect recording times. You can record PAL SD.
It’s best to use the free AJA datarate calculator, available on Mac, Windows and iPhone/iTouch to estimate recording times:

Hello Richard
I’d agree both are low cost these days.
AJA prefer not to AB products but I will list a few points you may wish to look over not covered in the string,
1. All AJA Kona products have an optional Breakout Box and optional 5 meter cable. This can really help for certain professional installs where you don’t want weighty cabling hanging off the card (can be damaging) and if you wish to mount the cable connections a distance away from the CPU.
2. The Kona LHi can handle 2k to a degree (but if this is a serious workflow for you I’d consider the Kona 3G).
3. Kona LHi has LTC input.
4. Every AJA product is hand and scope tested and enjoys 3 or 5 year advanced replacement warranty, and what many people consider to be industry leading support for free.
5. There is a mature range of useful and tested free AJA applications for the Kona range on Mac and PC:
https://www.aja.com/products/software/6. AJA extensively work with 3rd parties to ensure the product work well, but also to develop unique functionality, for instance the Adobe plug in architecture:
https://www.aja.com/products/kona/kona_compatibility.php6. AJA products have a lot of longevity, they are rarely EOL’d unless it’s really needed, for example the IoSD range from 2004 are today running on Snow Leopard. Also AJA product tend have a lot of room for growth. If you look at the Kona 3, since 2006 has been top dog in the editing world and folks buying the product in 2006 have enjoyed over 70 free software/firmware upgrades to date (as in fully tested feature additions, not patch fixes):

Just to flesh that out the K3G and the Hi53D both have HDMI 1.4a output for stereographic monitoring to consumer 3D displays, AES is now on BNC.
1.4a (as opposed ot 1.4 or any other HDMI flavour) is a big deal as we think it’s essential to handshake with the new 3d monitors that have no 3d menu controls.
