I’ll check next week which card. We tried just playing it out to tape and it was horrible. I’m not sure which editbox but it only accepts stuff off tape. I have been looking into xdcam on the web. Would I be right to think that it is a fairly compromised hd format?
Thanks for your reply, Matt. -
You wait until the cows come home.

I would second that advice. As someone who floats between Avid and FCP I would say that sub-clipping in Avid works very well for me, especially as the handles are maintained. In FCP I find markers to be the way to go. I forget exactly how you do it but you can have a window open showing the markers and just click on them in that window which takes you straight there. There are some improvements with FCP7 as well. Horses for courses.

I know, maddening isn’t? How hard can it be? Every time I work on Avid I realise how much I use animatte. There is a free plugin called 50 point bezier matte (search for it). It is fiddly but if you make a random shape with loads of points and save it as a favourite you can then use it when you need it. It is still a bit of a pain because you have to keep selecting the points in the viewer before you adjust them in the canvas.

Hi, if I understand you right you could, with 3 video layers have the same clip on the top two layers, add an edge wipe to the top layer, double click the wipe and make the start and end the same percentage, say 50%, feather the edge and make the duration of the wipe the duration of the clip. You now have a static wipe. Reduce the opacity of the clip underneath using the clip overlay (option w). Place another clip underneath which will show through. Just one of many ways to do this.

OT, Mark, you look much thinner in the excellent “mac break studio” videos than you do in your cow avatar. Is there a motion filter for that?

Make them into a stereo pair?

You can buy 1TB raid drive (with 2 500Gb drives in). If you run it as raid 1 you get speed advantages although not absolute security. I got mine of ebay for less than £200. Very easy to set up. You can daisy chain other Firewire 800 drives through it if you wish.

A Google search reveals lots about this. FCP does not like pre-multiplied edges. In PS you can choose layer > matting > remove black or you can put your animations through some other programme first and change the alpha to straight.
Hope this helps, Matt. -
Would it be heresy to suggest the “A” word in this context? I believe Avid can deal with multi-format multicam. I’m not sure about the frame rates though. There is an Avid forum here in the green pastures.
