I would try to get this effect in post, as it would be much easier to experiment and get the exact look you want. As stated above, it is essential that this is a lock off shot, so the only thing that would “smear” is the people moving. i believe motion has an effect called “posturize time” that would get this effect for you. “Trails” is the built in effect in FCP, although its not as good as motion.

But, if you DO want to achieve in the camera, as Rennie stated, I think you would want to slow the shutter waaayy down, and undercrank to get the fast action.

    Good luck!

That is sooooo utilitarian!!! Shame on you. We must support our plug in developers, musn’t we? Just the fact hat I have over 300+ 3rd party plugins on my system doesn’t say much does it?

Or it could be that I’m just bitter because I didn’t think of it first, and I could have used that $100 at happy hour…. 😉

Wow, you have got some bad luck with them! From my understanding, the bad board and VF cable was only in early units, so chances are since you’ve had your rotated out (twice!) you probably have a newer undated version. But it couldn’t hurt to check the serial number with your rep to make sure.

I just have to bang out several dvd’s for a client, grab some lunch and then I’ll be in the studio all afternoon with the shooter working out scenarios and setups. My dealer is letting me borrow the big CCU unit (AJ-RC10G) for the camera, so that should be fun! Its got an sd card slot in it to save all your settings there as well. Pretty cool.

I’ll post more after I’ve got some stuff saved, probably be tomorrow.

    Cheers!

I have seen this same thing with our 2000, and I’m not sure we have totally corrected the problem. One thing is that we now shoot everything at -3db, that seems tohelp a little. Also I went into the menus and did some tweaking with the pedestal levels and gamma levels. I will be doing more this afternoon, in fact. I fyou would like, I can send you or post my scene file when I get everything tweaked out the way our shooter likes. I will be making a bunch of presets, for SD and HD, for interview shooting and manufacturing facility type shooting. You can really tweak the detail, sharpness, knee levels and such to really get a good looking picture with this camera, and I think that as I adjust some of the stuff, those artifacts will start to go away.

Also, check with your panasonic rep, we had to bring our camera in, and they replaced the processing board inside the camera because of a bad solder joint, and they replaced the viewfinder feed wire inside the camera as well.

I’ll post back when I have some scene files for you.

April 14, 2008 at 9:57 pm in reply to: Editing P2 Content with an iMac

I have a 24″ iMac at home that I edit SD and HDV on, and while not being ideal, it gets the job done. I think the computer will be fine, you main bottleneck is going to be that you are limited to the Firewire 800 bus with no way to add on or expand. Load it up with RAM if you can, this will help as well, as mine only came with 1gb, I certainly feel the slowdown. I think they will handle up to 4 gig, and this will speed things up, especially if you have a large project with tons of clips.

    Good luck!

April 4, 2008 at 7:33 pm in reply to: Praise for Panasonic!!!

First thing he had me do is to hold the BB switch for 8 seconds, and it goes through a “black shading reset”. I think it said B-SHADE ACTIVE on the screen. He said that should take care of most dead pixels, but he thinks that there were 2 dead pixels with in the same block on the CCD, so sometimes the compensator gets confused and needs to be “retaught” where the dead ones are.

Well, in my case that didn’t work, so then he got me into the secret “service Menus”, and I cleared out the matrix that stores the information about all the dead pixels (it even has a built in backup register to save the current settings to in case you really screw something up) , then did the B-SHADE thing and it worked like a charm . In my case, the pixel wasn’t really dead per se, but it would go black when the picture was dark, but when the shot was brighter than maybe 50% it would freak and go full bore bright, especially if there was some saturated color there. You could also go into the matrix and select individual colors and kill them one by one if the B-SHADE didn’t take care of it.

Probably said more than I’m supposed to, might have some panasonic goons following me around now!!

Another update, looks like our dead pixel came back again. 3 people saw it, we were looking at the monitor, we all turned away and when we looked back, bam, there it was.

    Carp.

Trying to get a hold of panny techs, our reseller isn’t moving very fast right now. Black balance trick isn’t fixing it this time. Anyone find out anything else?

[Conan Stott] ” I need it to be emmitted horizontally across the screen but it just wants to float upwards? “

Select the emitter in the timeline, activate the HUD (option-apple-L) and grab the arrow and drag it to the direction you want it to flow. I tried it with a bunch of smoke emitters, and they all behaved properly, flowing in the direction I wanted them to. If its still not working, twirl down the reveal arrows on the emitter, and see if it has a gravity behavior attached to it that might be affecting it.

[Conan Stott] “and one more thing? Those pesky boxes are at it again this time in regards to text boxes….. I have a text box with a number 2 written as the text inside it, the effect on this text makes it flicker about a bit but when it flickers too far, it gets cut off by the text box which has resized itself to wrap neatly around my text, this makes the hard edge to the text box obvious. Is there a way to make the text box larger but leave the text the same size? “

Okay, lets clear up a little nomenclature- Text Box- you can’t change the size of a text box in Motion, Motion itself regulates the size of the box, and in fact its, not really a “box” so to speak, motion is showing you the boundaries of the text, to the extent that if you apply a blur, the “text box” will expand to show you how far the blur is extending beyond the original size of the text. That being said, no you can’t resize the text box directly.

Now, I have a funny feeling that you have created a box for the text to live in. Is this correct? If so, then you are dealing with something different, if not, lets move on.

Flicker- By default the flicker effect (Behaviors- text fade – flicker on, if this is the behavior you are using), doesn’t change the size of the text, so there should not be anything getting cut off by the flicker behavior.

So, to go further, if you want to send me your project file, I can take a look at it and see what you all have going on. But these questions should help us help you out.

    Good luck.
