Well, I, aaaah..
Its because I, uhhh…..
Any normal person would, ehhhh….
Shite, I don’t know. Fingers were probably moving faster than my eyes. Or it could have been 3am at the time. Same reason I come in in the morning and find 2000 pencils sticking out of the ceiling above my edit desk…

Just a silly idea, but this happens all the time with me when my boss (with dual 23″ cinema displays) starts a project and I need to take over (with 19″NEC displays). Have you tried restoring the default screen layout? Just incase, like you said, the pallet got moved off your screen.
Just an idea 😉

Ok, ok. Figgered it out.
The renaming works as long as you don’t rename the layer yourself. As soon as you double click on the layer’s name, rename it and hit enter, if you drag and drop another photo (or video) file onto that layer, it will no longer inherit the name of the new file. Same with text layers. I worked myself into a hissy one day trying to figure out why the name of my text layers wouldn’t rename themselves.
There’s your answer.

[Stephen Smith] “f it’s just a photo or a clip and you drag the “photo” from your File Browser to a different photo on the timeline the arrow will turn into a hook shaped arrow. When you let go of the mouse the name of the original photo will change to the new one in the timeline.”
Yessir, that is what I am doing. The only thing different (and I will confirm this as soon as my machine is done rendering) is that I am dragging my photo directly from a finder window onto the layer in the timeline. Little hooked arrow, yes, layer name changes to the new photo name, no.
I will post back in a few after my machine is done chugging away, trash my prefs and try it in a new project.
Thanks!

Haven’t tried it with drop zones yet, I’ll give it a shot.
But, in my project, I have a still photo with some animation moving it around the screen. if I try to replace that photo by dragging one from my folder in the finder, it doesn’t change the layer name in the timeline. It changes the media file in the media tab, and it changes the media name in the inspector for that layer, but it doesn’ changes the name of the layer in the timeline.
I’ll try trashing my preferences and trying again, but so far its not working.
Thanks!

Me too!! Me too!!
I have some setups that I tweaked for industrial shooting (warehouse, manufacturing) and others for interview setups and one for outdoors. Would like to compare and contrast my settings with yours.

[Jim Johnson] “What you can do, however, is tell the behavior to affect only one point on the line so that that point follows the animated object”
How exactly do you do this? How do you tell the behavior to track just the one point?
I have one bit working, but I’m not sure how I got it to work! Isn’t that the ticket? 😉

Boy, its amazing what you can figure out by pushing buttons.
Call off the hounds, I figgered it out! Not sure exactly how yet, but its working. This is a cool thing, might take a stab at making a tutorial for it. I’ll still post a movie of it when i get the chance.
Thanks!

Jim-
Ok, I can’t get it to work. Maybe it doesn’t work with text, but I’ve tried a couple of variations, but I can’t get it to work. Here’s the scene-
Still image of a product (think lawnmower) doesn’t move.
Small text block, animated, goes from scale=100 to scale =80 and moves to the right about 50 pixels over about 15 seconds.Line drawn from text block to “wheel” on mower. Need one end of the line to track with the text as it moves, but stay “stuck” on the wheel at the other end. Can I send you the project directly to have a look at it and see what I’m goofing up?
I see it working in the project that you so kindly posted, but I can’t get it to work in my own. Not sure why. I read the supplement in the motion help on motion tracking but it doesn’t do a reall bang up job explaining the process, or where it pulls the tracking data from.
Thanks!
