When you preview video in the Vegas preview window (not the external preview monitor) Vegas is drawing the frames onto your screen and they are affected by your desktop color settings (profile, gamma etc).
When you view the video in a player like VLC, MPC or Windows Media Player, it’s probably being rendered using the video card’s overlay feature (or by video card acceleration) and it does not get affected by the desktop gamma/color settings. Some video card drivers have separate color controls for video, and some players have their own controls. In addition, some drivers and/or media players try to convert TV levels to PC levels (or vice versa) for viewing on a PC, so the video may appear darker or more contrasty. You can simulate this in Vegas by putting the Levels effect in the video output FX and selecting the “Studio RGB to Computer RGB” preset.

Ed, did you get DVD Architect as part of the Studio Platinum 9 package? I’m not sure about Studio 9, but Studio 10 HD Platinum comes with DVD Architect bundled.
When you get to the end of the “Make Movie” wizard in Vegas you get the option to “Send to DVD Architect…”. If you choose that, DVD Architect will get launched, with your newly rendered video ready to go in a menu-based DVD template. You can fiddle with this if you want, or simply click the “Make DVD” button and select the “Prepare” option. That will give you the required folders/files to burn onto a DVD.
DVD Architect Studio 5 lets you burn to a disc or write an ISO image (don’t know about earlier versions). Instead of “Prepare”, select “Burn”, click your way through the wizard until the Burn Parameters page and select ISO Image Writer as the device to burn with.
DVD Architect can even add extra files (data files, software etc) to a DVD for you – just specify a folder for “extras” in the DVD project properties. You don’t really need special burning software unless you want some other advanced features.

The “Burn Disc” menu option in Movie Studio will directly burn a disc of your current project. You don’t get any option to save an image file or the DVD folder structure for later burning – Vegas does the whole lot in one step. I guess if you have a virtual DVD burner you can effectively save an ISO image of the DVD instead of burning a real disc.
You need DVD Architect (companion program to Vegas, and bundled with Movie Studio HD Platinum) in order to generate a DVD folder/file structure (the VOB, IFO etc files, aka your TS files). Then you can use any DVD burning software to burn these to a disc or create an ISO image.
The Make DVD wizard is supposed to launch DVD Architect once Vegas has rendered the video and audio files. Do you get a “send to DVD Architect” option in the wizard dialog after rendering?

You haven’t gone wrong… there’s just another step to do first.
You can either do the whole DVD creation in Movie Studio (Tools > Burn Disc > DVD) or create the MPEG and AC3 files in Movie Studio then use DVD Architect to create the DVD folder structure and required files.
Provided you used the correct templates to render your video and audio (MainConcept MPEG2 and one of the DVD Architect templates, then Dolby AC3), you can use these files in a DVD Architect project. Once they are part of a DVD Architect project (easiest way is to start a new single movie type project, and select the MPEG2 video file when prompted for media), you can prepare the disc files for burning (File > Make DVD, then click Prepare…). Then you’ll get a folder with the usual TS files ready to burn. DVD Architect can do the burning itself too.

I just tried my method described above and it works quite well – there’s just one major snag…
If you camera suffers from rolling shutter (as mine does), you’ll end up with a very wobbly, flabby looking speaker cone!
For some inspiration, search Youtube or the like for non-Newtonian fluid on speaker cone…

Something to try is using the beat frequency effect to give you instant “slow motion” footage without any editing trickery.
I haven’t tried this, but theoretically you can shoot the speaker at say 60p or 60i, and feed the speaker with a sine wave at slightly higher or lower than 60Hz (or 120Hz, whatever gives the largest cone excursion safely). If the shutter speed is high enough (use lots of light), you’ll get sharp video and the cone will appear to move slowly because each frame is taken at a slightly different point on successive sine cycles.
If you play a 61Hz (or 120.5Hz) sine through the speaker, you’ll get video in which the speaker appears to be playing a 1Hz sine (the difference of the sine frequency and frame rate). You can adjust the sine frequency to give you the required smooth slow-motion appearance.

In Movie Studio HD 10 (and maybe also Vegas Pro 10), the stabilisation seems to be rendered in real-time (ie during preview or output render) rather than pre-computed/rendered as an actual video file. I notice the CPU usage increases when previewing stabilised events compared to normal events using the same source media. I think only the motion analysis is done off-line when you apply stabilisation. That might explain why stabilised clips can’t be reversed.

It seems that the Pixelate effect (and maybe some other effects) scales according to the displayed preview size rather than the project settings size. For these you need to preview at the full size to be sure that what you see is what will be rendered. I guess that counts as a sort of bug in the effect…

Because of the way the preview gets scaled when set to Auto/Half/Quarter, you can get a false impression of the Pixelate effect. Are you sure you are previewing at full size? You must either preview on an external monitor, or set the preview window to Full, e.g. Best/Full or Preview/Full (NOT Auto/Half/Quarter). You can enable “Scale Video to fit Preview Window” (R-click on preview) to get the full preview to fit into its window regardless of the preview window size.

I believe CUDA with Fermi (GTX400 series) cards requires the newest drivers to work properly. If you don’t have driver version 197 or later, try upgrading the drivers.
