  • video fx: preview VS render

Alright. Here is my problem. I am using some video fx in Sony Vegas Pro 9.0. Three of them include Convolution Kernel, News Print and Pixelate.

The problem is, in the preview window, the effects look GREAT, but when I go to render them, they look terrible- nothing like how they look in the preview.

One example is the pixelate. I have it set to 0.8 (very large pixels), and in the preview, yes indeed, you see very large pixelation. But in the actual render, it makes very small pixelation.

What could be the cause of this?

    Thanks – Hass

Make sure your Preview window is set to Best/Full when creating them so that you know that “what you see is what you get”.

    Hi Mike. Thanks for replying.

I tried what you said; setting the preview to “best” quality. It looks identical to when the preview was set to “preview” quality, and still renders incorrect.

    Any other explanations?

Sorry Hass but no other explanations.
I just tried the same thing, rendered to AVI & WMV and it looked like it did in the Preview window.
I have a vague recollection of this issue being discussed here recently so try doing a search and see if something turns up.

Because of the way the preview gets scaled when set to Auto/Half/Quarter, you can get a false impression of the Pixelate effect. Are you sure you are previewing at full size? You must either preview on an external monitor, or set the preview window to Full, e.g. Best/Full or Preview/Full (NOT Auto/Half/Quarter). You can enable “Scale Video to fit Preview Window” (R-click on preview) to get the full preview to fit into its window regardless of the preview window size.

    Thanks Matt.
That’s the answer I was looking for.
I hope it helps clarify things for Hass.

It seems that the Pixelate effect (and maybe some other effects) scales according to the displayed preview size rather than the project settings size. For these you need to preview at the full size to be sure that what you see is what will be rendered. I guess that counts as a sort of bug in the effect…

    Matt and Mike,

Thank you so much. This is indeed the issue. I was previewing at AUTO not at FULL, and it certainly DOES change certain fx. You live and learn, I suppose.

    Thanks! – Hass
