    Shane, are there any good apps out there that give you info and metadata on files. something that gives you frame rate, size, progressive vs. interlaced, codec, audio format, yada yada yada.

  • Huh, did not know that. But that will def come in handy for batch encoding. Especially the interlacing tip. I’d been doing those in AE, adding 3:2 interlaced that way. Thx. Those are nine tips.

    Thought so. Even with 720×480 NTSC, QT 7 will display it as square pixels (655×480) unless you change the Presentation to Encoded Pixels under the Movie Properties menu. So the whole 720×480 square just seems wrong. Thx

  • I meant that with the one I did in Compressor, turning on the frame controls to best, I think the optical flow was interpulating or blending the 2 frames to create a new one. Not sure if that’s the right terminology or not but sounded good to me. haha

  • Bring that movie back in to FCP, setup a 720p59.94 timeline with the codec of your choice and drop the movie in there and hit no when FCP asks if you want to change the settings. You will notice progressive 3:2 pulldown.

    Jeremey, progressive pulldown? Stepping through, is that 1 dup frame, 1 new frame. 2 dup frames, 1 new frame? Sound right?

    I’m doing this now (I know we’ve been through this before in other posts), I have a 1080p23.98 file going into a 720p59.94 timeline. All same codec, ProRes 422. Just seems like there’s some weird frame blending n what not. I’ve also tried Compressor for this with frame controls on. Good results through playback, but stepping through it just looks odd. Maybe I just need to get over how it looks stepping through and go by playback on our broadcast monitor, which is fine. thx

    To my knowledge you can not change the MPEG 2 size in Compressor. You must use the pre-determined sizes and select from that. But you can however, change the size to whatever you want with some other codec, like h.264.

  • How are you viewing the output? With an external broadcast monitor or even a TV, the image should look clear. If using you computer monitor, set your canvas to 100% and Option R your timeline to render/write the video. This might take some time but will provide full res playback and should, look like smooth gradient. If not, it then has to be your file. Try exporting a TIF. Making sure your file is 72 dpi and at the proper frame size as your sequence. Best to use Photoshop presets for new document and go from there.

  • What are your sequence settings? Use the high quality code like prores 422 and make try using 10 bit vs. 8 bit. Save your PNG file as progressive and work in a progressive sequence.

    I think what you’re referring too around the subjects head is the morphing looking stuff. I believe that this is optical flow doing its thing. Its examining the previous and next frames to create the middle frame. This will result in a morphing looking motion.
