    I was wondering if compressor can handle a conversion
    from 23.076-fps-progressive-(1080p)
    to
    a broadcast standard of H264-codec that is 720p60 or 1280×720-59.64-fps (the ABC broadcast format)

    it would imply making a progressive pull-down as opposed to the an interlaced pull-down.

    Does anyone know the proper settings to achieve this?

    Compressor can do this, yes.

    You can also do this in FCP itself. FCP is acutally correct at handling pulldown in a 720p world.

    What I would do is export your 1080p23.976 movie as a self contained.

    Bring that movie back in to FCP, setup a 720p59.94 timeline with the codec of your choice and drop the movie in there and hit no when FCP asks if you want to change the settings. You will notice progressive 3:2 pulldown.

    If you want to use Compressor you can do that too.

    Or, if you have an AJA capture card, you can simply cross convert this in hardware on output.

    Jeremey, progressive pulldown? Stepping through, is that 1 dup frame, 1 new frame. 2 dup frames, 1 new frame? Sound right?

    I’m doing this now (I know we’ve been through this before in other posts), I have a 1080p23.98 file going into a 720p59.94 timeline. All same codec, ProRes 422. Just seems like there’s some weird frame blending n what not. I’ve also tried Compressor for this with frame controls on. Good results through playback, but stepping through it just looks odd. Maybe I just need to get over how it looks stepping through and go by playback on our broadcast monitor, which is fine. thx

    SHould be frame, dupe, new frame, 2 dupes, frame, dupe, new frame, 2 dupes, etc.

    It’s 3:2 pulldown, just using whole frames instead of fields.

    I meant that with the one I did in Compressor, turning on the frame controls to best, I think the optical flow was interpulating or blending the 2 frames to create a new one. Not sure if that’s the right terminology or not but sounded good to me. haha

    Yes, you are right. If using compressor, use the “fast” options for deinterlace and rate conversion (and make sure output fields are set to progressive). That should get you the frames instead of interpolation. You can still use “best” for frame size.

    It’s just like adding interlaced 3:2 pulldown, you leave those setting to fast and it will create the fields properly.

    Huh, did not know that. But that will def come in handy for batch encoding. Especially the interlacing tip. I’d been doing those in AE, adding 3:2 interlaced that way. Thx. Those are nine tips.

    That works too. Compressor is a little easier for batches, and will keep similar tc to original.
