Rafael, review John and Dave’s posts above. This worked for me. I’ve also found a short YouTube vid that helps explain it below. The mixdown feature has helped tremendously for me, especially when you have loads of audio tracks. Not to mention the comment about trash old render files with the render manager tool.

The mixdown just takes the load of your processor. So even though you might have, for ex., 12 audio tracks, when you do a mixdown, it essentially is mixing that down to 2, without visually or destructively doing so. Its like rendering your video for playback. check this link.

as for X, I just got done watching the atlantacutters.com videos on X, MC and PP hosted by Walter B. It was really interesting to hear about PP and MC.

I haven’t messed with X yet at all. Still in 7 world and loving it. I have zero experience with the others but the new shop I’m at is mostly Avid, with the exception of a few FCs, which is where i live. So I really want to learn MC. And after watching those videos, PP looks pretty nice as well. Being self-taught, it’ll be intersting to see how easy, or not, the others are to work with. It’ll take some getting used to but looking forward to it.

yeah, there are some really interesting reads out there. bunum murray, MTV going back to avid. others using X and finding work arounds. time will tell.

Thought so. But if I place the converted 29.97 with 3:2 in my 29.97p sequence with the XDCam footage, will they play nice? Or should I just drop the 23.98 material into the 29.97p edit and let FCP add in the incorrect 4:2 and be done with it.

These camera formats really mess things up. Why bother making cameras shoot progressive 29.97 or 30p if thats supposed to be an interlaced format. It gets confusing with P2 shooting PN and Sony with 29.97p and others as well.

3. Click on that newly created compression setting to open it in the Inspector window. Click the Encoder tab. Click the Video: (Settings…) button. Make the frame rate 29.97. Check the interlaced box. Set it’s drop down menu to Bottom field first (or make it progressive if you want to keep it progressive. But if the rest of your footage is interlaced, this will work well). Click OK.

Shane, I just got done asking Jeremy this question about adding in pulldown. I know you answered a question a few weeks back for me as well similar to this. But when adding pulldown to 23.98 1080 material, can you make the resulting clip a progressive 29.97? Like you mention above.

I have a 1080p29.97 sequence from a XDCam EX3 camera. I need to add some finished spots we have to the edit. Those are ProRes 23.98. I was going to add in pulldown using your above method, but that will give me Interlaced footage and I want progressive.

It’s possible, but not advisable. I’d simply add normal 3:2 interlaced pulldown. The motion characteristics will be different for 30p vs the 24p matieral, but the 24p material will look more natural than trying to make progressive 30p with pulldown. An alternative would be to put both kinds in a 720p60 timeline.

So how then would the 1080i29.97 material with 3:2 pulldown (from my 23.98p) work in my 1080p29.97 sequence? I would be mixing the progressive XDCam footage with pulldown added interlaced footage. Will they be happy together?

In 1080 HD, they are the same. 59.94 vs 29.97 interlaced are equal. Manufacturers name them differently when they are really the same.

Thats what I thought. And I wonder why someone was telling me to set up a 59.94i sequence when its actually 29.97. I knew I was right. That dummy. haha

Any experience with FCPX yet. How does X handle pulldown. Did they finally get it right like Avid does in mixing frame rates?

Jeremy, a little off topic, I have a sequence edited with some XDCam footage shot at 1080p29.97 and want the 23.98 TV spot Masters I have to edit in match the Progressive 29.97 sequence I editing in. Because I know FCP does pulldown incorrectly with 4:2. Is it possible to add 3:2 pulldown to 1080p23.98 material and make it 29.97 Progressive and not interlaced?

And just for my understanding, on the interlaced side, when adding pulldown to 23.98p material to make 29.97 Interlaced material, you’re sequence settings in FCP are then 1080i29.97 correct? Or should they be 59.94i? I get the whole FPS vs fields per second thing but why would you bother to have a 59.94 sequence for interlaced material when 59.94 fields, plays at 29.97 frames per second anyway? Or wouldn’t you?

Hey Rafael, thx. But even though its EX is Long GOP and ProRes is I-frame? Thought the long gop was more taxing on the CPU and if on a prores sequence you’d have to render more often?

Shane, for adding the pulldown using Compressor using Fast, does this add in 3:2 pulldown properly like AE would? I’ve always had issues with Compressor and frame rate conversions for 23.98 to broadcast spec. May also be because I’ve used Better and/or Best when doing them.

Also, with this being a tapeless workflow, what about masters to tape. I’m assuming for creating your own master tape, you could rely on your I/O device, like our AJA IoHD to add in the pulldown properly, right.

Thought so. that whole drop frame, non drop frame things confuses me too, but I’ll do some reading up on that. thx Shane.

Just thought it might have been like the old Canon 5D 30p thing. where it was actually 30 fps before the fireware update happened a few years back. That gave me some nasty sync issues.
