Need to deliver 29.97 interlaced but footage is 1080p24

In Compressor you can set field dominance you need: Go to Inspector then to second tab Encoder then Video Format.

Thanks. I think I tried what you are saying. I sent my 1080p sequence to Compressor, choosing Quicktime h.264 and changing the frame rate to 29.97 in the video settings and changing output field to top first in frame controls. However, my exported file from that played fast- it played at 29.97 for 24 seconds. And it had the interlacing lines through it. It didn’t look horrible but it didn’t look like it did when it was progressive. Anyway, I’m doing a new test. For set duration to, I selected “so source frames play at 29.97 fps.” Maybe that’s what made it play fast. Now I’m doing a test where I selected 100% of source. So, assuming this works, is it normal for my footage to have the small lines through it now since I selected top field first? I also tried making an MPEG 2 which is also another deliverable option. I can select field dominance in the encoder tab there. I chose MPEG2 Transport and it says that there should be audio with it but there is no audio on my exported file. Do I have to do audio as a separate element?

Okay. Changing the duration to 100% of source seems to have worked. I still see the lines in the footage mostly when there is fast motion but I have to assume that this is because of choosing the upper field first and there is nothing much I can do about it. So, technically, I think my export meets the specs I’m supposed to deliver. However, if anyone has read this tread and knows a better way I’d love to hear it.

Your computer monitor displays progressively. When you play interlaced footage it’s normal to notice lines.

Make sure that stuff is not for BluRay or DVD delivering.
If so, all the p24 > i29.97 conversion is unnecessary.
That picture just need a pull down added to be i29.97.
This operation is done on the fly by DVD and BR players, and do not degrades the picture quality.
This is done just by repeating certain fields of the original picture.
Converting p24 > i29,97 you need to re-process the whole original image.

This will produce proper 3:2 pulldown. I do it all the time for broadcast.

I’m not sure I got the question. Progressive stands for no fields. If you choose upper/lower field dominance for progressive footage then you’ll get interlaced material outputted. Interlaced means a frame consists of two fields upper/lower (or odd/even).

Lisa has to add 3:2 pulldown to her 24p movie.

It’s a decades old industry standard of getting 24p material to NTSC. This process makes fields from the existing 24p footage for a 1080i broadcast.
