January 13, 2011 at 10:59 pm in reply to: Renders for sequence and nested not the same

[Bret Williams] “Nested sequences is the only time FCP does destructive compositing. If a nested sequence is already rendered, it will use those render files as the source for effects added TO the nest within another seqeunce. It has to really. Because if the nest is in multiple sequences, and it rerendered the nest from the ground up, it would destroy renders in other sequences. Destroying one point of nested sequences in the first place.”

That’s not an accurate description of what’s going on. FCP is never adding effects or anything like that to render files. All it does to render files once they are rendered is managed them. If Sequence A is rendered and dropped into sequence B, FCP is simply pointing to (referencing) those original sequence A render files. If you then add an effect, change the opacity or composite something else ontop of that FCP is no longer referencing those sequence A render files. When You render it creates all new render files completely seperate from sequence A’s original render files these are now sequence B render files. Etc etc.

It’s not destroying those sequence A render files…they are still sequence A render files and are still available to any sequence that references those sequence A render files.

Sorry, I was thinking of the problem only in regards to render files, and that’s what i was speaking to…so I wasn’t addressing length issues.

Render files are handle PER sequence. So if you render sequence z that contains nest of sequence W, X, Y. FCP says ok… these renderfiles are associated associated with sequence Z and it doesn’t look inside and say..you know what this thing that i’m rendering is actually sequence w, X, Y.

He’s not saying Not to edit the thing is several sections (sequences). he’s saying to wait to put it all in one sequence till you are done with it. Then, rather than placing the sequences into a new sequence…so they are nests…Copy/paste all the edits from each sequence into that main sequence.

Shane is right, terrible Idea to do it this way because of the reason you’ve already figured out…NESTs don’t auto update.

I’d suggest you do it the way shane already suggested, however if you are stubborn and refuse to do it that way you can manually update each of the nests with a couple keystrokes. Put the playhead at the first fram of a nest hit x to mark the clip which will set in’s and outs on the timeline, then hit f which will matchframe that nest with the original (which should be newly rendered) then hit f10 to overwrite edit or f11 to replace edit. This should work for updating the nests….but in the long run you’re better off copy pasting into the main timeline once it’s all finished.

Do yourself a favor for next time and create disc images of all your install disc and keep them on a Firewire drive. That way the next time you need to reinstall it’ll only take a fraction of the time.

August 31, 2010 at 3:19 pm in reply to: Edit to tape 1 frame off

    Mike,

In case the offset isn’t the problem.

I had a similar issue for a while. It was intermittent and nothing would fix it. FCP for some reason was Dropping one of the frames of Bars and Tone on ETT. So even though my Bars duration was 35:00 it would only lay 34:29. Check one of your layoffs to see if that’s what is happenening. I just had to deal with the issue for a while and then I figured out what was happening. Sometimes I’d open an older project from a previous version of FCP and grab some elements. Sometimes I’d also grab my bars tone/slate because it was for the same client. So for some reason anytime i’d grab old bars from a project that wasn’t the exact same version of FCP It would drop 1 frame of the bars. I have no idea why it did this. But the workaround I’ve used has just been to use fresh bars/tone everytime…and don’t copy paste the bars/tone. Hope this helps.

August 30, 2010 at 4:56 pm in reply to: Fading multiple layers?

[Thom Obarski] “if you’re fading to or from black you can put a slug above both layers and fade up onto or off of the slug”

If it’s not black. You can do the same thing using a video layer. Grab the next shot in the timeline and hold option + Shift wile you drag to the upper most video track. This will put a duplicate of the clip directly above where the clip arlead is. Then back time that clip for the duration of the transition. Say 15 frames. Then create your fade with the opacity at the spot where the next shot is totally visible (ie where the orignal cut is) blade off that top video layer and delelete it. So you’ll just have a clip right over your composite that’s timed correctly and is just the duration of the fade.

August 30, 2010 at 4:36 pm in reply to: Widescreen filter

You can also put a color matte on the top video layer and apply the mask shape layer to it and adjust it till it’s the amount of widescreen you like. and click the inverse checkbox. This way you don’t have to apply a filter to multiple video layers.

[Jason Brown] “I simply insert each of the FCS discs and copy ONE single file (DMG) over to a Firewire drive? Then when I want to install the suite, I mount each of the DMG’s representing each disc…?”

no… you are creating a DMG (disk Image) of the DVDS.
    https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh3.html

[Jason Brown] “Should I do this with the OS installer?”

You can’t do it with an OS disk because the computer needs to be able to boot off of an OS install disk

[Jason Brown] “Can I run this same process to install multiple machines with different Serials for FCS?”
    Yes.

[Jason Brown] “How do you guys keep things like custom compressor settings, episode settings…etc? Go into each piece of software and back them up individually?”
Those type of settings are stored in differnt areas of the computer and can be backed up…you don’t back up the entire program….just those settings which are typically in the library. Off hand I can’t tell you where each of them are but I’m sure if you search around on the forum you can find the info.

[joel conder] “i guess than my main problem now then is the fact i dont have the original install discs for my mac. do i need these or can i just use the snow leopard disc?”

You can use just the snow leapord install disc to rebuild your system from scratch…but iLife apps will not be installed. So no iphoto. imovie etc etc. I never use those apps on a work machine so It’s never been a problem for me.

[walter biscardi] “Wiping the entire system and clean and re-installing everything fresh always boosts the performance of the system and keeps everything running well.”

It’s much easier to invest the time in preventing problems before they happen. There’s nothing worse than having huge problems arise with your system when you are working on tight deadlines.

[Jason Brown] “The biggest issue for me is that it took me 6 hours last time to install the FCP suite. That is a ton of time to eat up not getting work done.”

If you want the process of rebuilding to go faster just plan ahead. I made disc images of all my software install discs and keep them on a FW drive. When I need to install studio apps on a machine at the office i just mount the images and the process takes a fraction of the time. Also anytime Anyone downloads any type of installer from the web…even if it’s just a flash player…they they put the orginal dmg file in a special place…that I later transfer to the same drive. This way all of the stuff I need to rebuild a system (as far as software is concerned) is in one convenient location.
