I can only speak for myself, and I have only listened to about half of the podcast. But from watching a few of your other video things on the podcast you seem like a pretty decent guy and you always seem to just be presenting things as best you know how, and from what i”ve seen in the past and even now, you always seem to be willing to admit when you’re wrong about something.

But I’ve noticed sometimes that walter has a tendency of being right even when he’s wrong. over the years I’ve seen him say stuff as if it were the absolute bottom line truth about something, even when it isn’t. Like at the front end of the podcast you said something about having installed it on a machine that already has FCS or something like that….and Walter Is like “whoa, you’re a braver fella than I am”. THe insinuation is that it’s dangerous to do things the way you’ve done it….as if your machine will explode or self destruct. But really, it’s not that dangerous. Apple recommends it be on a differnt partition, but says it will work on the same partition if you install it there. So it’s not always just the things that are said, but the way in which they are said.

Furthermore I’ve noticed that at least one of the assertions walter makes about the software in his article (Final Cut Pro X: What’s Missing for Some Pros) is not the whole truth. Weather or not he knew it wasn’t the whole truth, only he knows….BUT he still presented it as if it were the absolute truth about the matter.

FWIW, I come across as an a$$ hole in real life and on messgae boards on the internets, but really i’m a nice guy in person.

[Ben Holmes] “Absolutely not the case. I think the only limitation is carrying the project with the media – so if you take a drive from one computer to the other, the project opens exactly as you left it. I’ve been doing this all day. It’s quite liberating.

Walter alludes to the fact that if two people are working on the same project, and both have local media, they can’t mail the project to each other. If that’s true (I’m sure it is) this needs fixing. But for what you want, if I read you correctly, FCPX is all good. A Thunderbolt drive would round stuff off nicely.

Ben, read my response I just posted. Walter was Partially right.

I read your stuff on another thread…and the reason that worked for you is you had built the project on that portable drive…so when you opened the project it knew where the event’s library was. I’m assuming walter did a test (he might not have). and it wouldn’t automatically know where the event’s library was and he couldn’t figure out how to get it to mount the event’s library.

NOpe… that’s just plain Wrong. I just tested it. I have FCPX on both a MacPro and a macbook pro. I copied my “FCP Projects” folder as well as My “FCP Events” folder from my Raid on the MacPro to an FW800 Drive. Plugged the drive in to my

That’s Wrong… but not Totally Wrong. It doesn’t work the way you’d want it to.

I just ran a couple tests. I have FCPX loaded on a Mac Pro, and a MacBook Pro. I edited/keyworeded something on my Mac Pro. Then dropped my FCP Events Folder and my FCP Projects folder on a FW Drive. I mounted that and the project opened fine….but I thought walter was right. It wouldn’t load the events library meaning all the logging organizing metadata was gone. BUT. Then I decided to create a new event on that FW drive. Effectivly telling final cut Look at this drive too when searching for event directories. So when I quit out of final cut after creating that new event. I reopened and there was my original Event data from my MacPro.

There appears to be no way of manually loading an events library which seems to be a problem…but There’s a workaround. Only took me five minutes to figure out. It does seem to illustrate a problem on the user end…which is once people hit a wall…they assume something isn’t possible…so they give up. Rather than poking around a bit for a solution.

It defaults to the Movie folder, but you can save an event and subsequent imported media anywhere you like.

I can totally understand lurking. I lurked for 3 years on a skatboarding online forum before I actually posted in it. A lot of message boards even show how many “guests” are viewing topics at any given time. At the cow we don’t really have that. I’ve been a member here since 2004 i think, and I don’t have that many posts, b/c I lurk way more than I post.

I know it’s technically in snowleapord as well. I could be wrong about this…but I thought I’d read that snow leopard was still heavily reliant on quicktime, and it wouldn’t be gone as we know it till Lion.

I haven’t tried it yet But you should be able to do what you are asking. It allows you the ability to Create events (previously called projects) on any drive you want. It also will organize all your imported media into one location for you. So assuming you have an external drive and your media and event(project) are on that external…it should work on any machine.

Buddy, I just read your original response. I wasn’t trying to call you a fanboy. I was more making a comment on how Scott’s been looking at how long people have been active poster’s for and noticing that a lot of accounts were started on the day the product was launched.

I totally agree with your views. I think judgement needs to be with held and i’ve been digging into the program as well as reading the manual and other available resources. Overall I like where this app is headed.
