You’re right, it is. The demo looks very impressive. In my work up until now, I haven’t needed more then a standard dissolve, but it’s a great option for if I ever want or need more. I’ll surely keep it in the back of my head.
It’s both impressive in capability and in the user interface that they found to make the power of the plugin visual. It seems like a small thing, but I can imagine this taking a lot of resources finding a user interface to let you animate stuff or see how a preset will look like and how you can change parameters.

I don’t really have a need for an assymetrical dissolve, but this plugin looks really fantastic. If I ever need one, I know where to spend my money 🙂
I did buy Simon’s (Hawaiki’s) Picture-in-picture plugin and I can vouch for excellent customer service from Simon!

Wouldn’t this be the same with tracks? (I don’t use a DAW, so excuse me for if it’s a stupid question)
Anyhow, I’m very curious to see how Apple will tackle this. I think it’s a hard problem to tackle, user-interface wise, but at the same time, I think the concept of Roles is pretty genius. The idea of within this trackless timeline, to come up with the idea of having stuff labelled meta-datawise based on their CONTENT and being able to easily export it in seperate tracks without doing (what Charlie calls) Track Tetris… I still admire that and I think Roles are one of these things that a lot of people who haven’t tried out X yet, don’t know the existence of, while I think it’s one of it’s most genius features.

And automatic presets you could slap on dialogue and music to get dialogue come trough when the mixer sees that there is music underneath, and so you just have to adjust instead of doing it from the start. Well, this is maybe a big sin to people who do audio design, but as a tool for the editor that’s optional, it would be a great way to start off an audio mix.
To answer Oliver’s original question: it seems that if you want it interfere with the user interface of X itself, that I don’t think it can be a plugin.
I do think better audio is on Apple’s roadmap, and I’m still thinking it will be one of the big focus points of the next big feature update.https://mathieughekiere.wordpress.com

Use the timeline Index?
It’s the button on the lower left of the timeline. There you can do a search for a clip, and if you click on it, it will bring you to that spot in the timeline.
Timeline Index = one of FCPX’s greatest underrated features.

“Well, that’s nice, but I just saw the story appear on Fcp.co, and I thought it was a bit pointless to have a thread that was teasing for another article (with all due respect, Bill) instead of just posting the article when it was ready. So at least, if the article was in the thread, people could discuss it, which was probably the whole point.
As Bill knew the article was coming, he did have early honors or whatever. I just did my daily visit to fcp.co and wanted to get the discussion going 😉
With this thread also, I think it’s a bit confusing to have 2 threads talking about the same article.It’s a great article, and detailed. I think for a lot of post-houses it can be an eye-opener to see a big network switching to it, and being happy about the performance they are getting, even on older hardware, which surprised me.
But it’s clear that Sam Mestman is doing great things. Even his tutorials from late 2012 about how to work with RED Raw Media in FCPX, and Audio Components, in FCPX 10.0.6 were great and of a really high level. Cheers to him and Ronny and their teams for doing excellent work and sharing it with the community!
Although I’m just an editor and I don’t know anything about the whole networking stuff, I can attest that there is a big difference between the theoretical speeds a NAS server can give you, and giving you reliable performance with FCPX. For that alone, the article was a very interesting read, and I sent it trough to a couple of people managing the facility where I work (where I made them switch to FCPX completely since 10.0.6, because I had tested it since 10.0.3 and fount it to be ‘ready’ for us at 10.0.6, and seeing that I could get much better results, faster).https://mathieughekiere.wordpress.com
