Jeremy You would capture HDV, and then you’d take that raw footage from your capture scratch and run it through compressor. As long as you take the raw footage from the capture scratch (and don’t export anything from FCP) your timecode and all of that should get passed on to the DVCPro HD files.

Is there a tutorial for this? I would like to give it a try with a few clips to compare.

Jeremy“HD downconvert from the camera menu, and edit on a DV NTSC sequence in FCP 6” …Yep. You can do that. You can then also recapture to HD at the end (although I hear this process is perilous with HDV due to timecode reasons) for an HD master.

after I’m done with my DV sequence in FCP 6, how would I recapture to HD for my final output?
With my experience this is what I’ll do with a DV sequence:

1- export quicktime movie from FCP
2- bring the FCP movie into compressor for mpeg-2 (DVD best quality 90 min)
3-bring in the mpeg-2 into DVDSP and make my 15 minute SD DVD.

Jeremy: thank you for your advise in both threads. You make sense, I’m not going to use the IO HD in my Powermac. I was asking if to convert my HDV to DVCPRO HD is possible without a capture card, I was thinking maybe FCP can do this or any other good recommended software? From what I’ve been researching DVCPRO HD has a higher resolution than HDV and file size may be smaller than a HDV source clip?

I was also thinking if I should just HD downconvert from the camera menu, and edit on a DV NTSC sequence in FCP 6. A local friend told me he does this all the time from his Canon A1, and the image still looks good. My final product for my client will be on a DVD, 15 minutes in length.

    thank you all….

September 19, 2008 at 8:54 pm in reply to: Uncompressed 1080 30F/ Canon XL-H1, HD SDI output ?

ok so here is what i have done so far. im renting today a canon XL-H1 camera to use as a VTR over the weekend. I couldn’t find a VTR to playback the mini DV tapes i have in 1080/30F. My question here now is: to convert the 1080i/30F footage to DVCPRO HD, can I do this in FCP? or do i need a MXO2 or AJA to make this happen?

my editing system is a Powermac G5 Quad 2.5Ghz, 6.5 Gigs of memory RAM.
Final Cut Studio 2, FCP version 6.02.

  • Todd: Would you know if the deck (M15U) will playback my mini DV tapes I got recorded at 1080i/30F ? I rented the camera so I only have the tapes. From what I have been reading it is best to import all the footage with a DVCPRO HD codec.

Yeah I think im going to digitize the tapes into a hard drive and give him the tapes plus a hard drive(s).

From Canon’s website: 1080i/30F is 1080i/29.97 interlaced – with a progressive “look” at 30 Frames.

Michael: DVCPRO HD is an alternative im looking at going with because of the drive space I’ll end up needing. I dont have a XL-H1 camera. So im still looking for a VTR for rental for the mini DV tapes I have recorded at 1080i/30F.

I have never dealed with DVCPRO HD codecs before. So my question here now is, How would I start this procedure from the mini DV tapes, to importing and output with DVCPRO HD from FCP to Compressor or Sorenson Squeeze?

After this project, I’m buying the new MacPro hooked up with all the extra goodies including a raid system. This was my first live concert coverage and I was trying to keep my client’s budget down while being able to shoot in HD. My Final DVD is only going to be a 10-15 minutes DVD highlight presentation of the overall concert (more like 10 minutes).

I still got some budget money to rent a few post-production equipment like a VTR, monitor, AJA io HD, tapes to clone the master Mini DV tapes, but I’m still in my research mode before spending the next dollar…

  • Todd:

I need to do the same with footage on mini DV tapes that was recorded using the Canon XL-H1 at 1080i/30F. Did you find any solution to your project?

I got 20 mini DV tapes that need to be cloned for a client.

Terry: can u playback and record 1080i/30F from your Sony M15U ?

I recently shot a lot of footage using the XL-H1 at 1080i/30F to mini DV tapes and now I need to capture to FCP. I’m currently looking at renting a VTR that can playback and record that format. I also need to clone the master tapes. I have a deadline to meet so I’m looking at the best and afforable solution to import.

    Let me know, thanks!

check out this link from the Canon website talks about 1080i/30F
    https://www.usa.canon.com/app/html/XLH1/frame_rates_formats.shtml

In 60i mode, the frame rate switches between 60i (60 fields per second, interlaced-the “standard” video speed), 30F, and 24F.

These Frame modes have the same look as progressive frame rates, but are not labeled “progressive” because they are created with an interlaced chip. The end result is exactly the same to the editing system (and to our eyes) as 30p and 24p, respectively.

Note: The actual frame rates are 59.94, 29.97 and 23.976 for 60i mode.

ps: i recently recorded a live disco concert arena size with 7,000 people in attendance with four (4) rented Canon XL-H1 at 1080i/30F to mini DV tapes (total of 20 tapes). I currently seeking the best and afforable solution to capture my mini DV tapes to a Powermac Quad G5 to FCP.
