Haven’t run M4 on LIon so don’t know. Separate partition is safest – but I run M4 and M5 (and FCP7/FCPX) on the same partition on Snow Leopard – with the caveat of following Apple’s advice:

I believe it’s a bug – we discovered it during our training week before last. Another bug with Lion: in FCPX, if you apply a title, you can’t change its location in the Viewer.

It’s not possible to have more than one project open with Motion 5. Are you sure you are using Motion 5? F8 should say “Player Mode”

I assume you are on a laptop, which means you need to hold down the fn key before pressing F8 – unless you go into System Prefs, keyboard, and check the “Use F1, F2, etc…” checkbox

The easiest way to go about this is to use Motion 5 and FCP X because you can build a rig and publish it to FCPX in order to adjust for different text lengths.
But for Motion 4, you can use a workaround by linking the parameter you want to change (the size of the box) to a dummy text scale parameter which can be adjust in FCP7. This video shows you how:

Both excellent points – yes it’s good to save a preview movie and yes it’s good to place the playhead at the appropriate location, thanks for mentioning those.
As to the theme, if you look in FCP X, the last browser is the Themes Browser. Any templates you tag with a theme will appear here. It’s purpose is to gather together multiple types of effects (transition, titles, etc.) that have the same look and feel. For example, you may have a set of effects that you use on a particular show you produce on a regular basis. Rather than clicking on each browser to get that show’s title, its transitions, etc., you can see theme all in the Theme Browser.
