It is likely that your Sequence Audio Output Setting is set to discrete outputs. Go into your Sequence settings – Audio Output tab, and choose the Stereo Monitoring preset. You should get your pan controls back.

To get AAF into Pro Tools, make sure the “Split Tracks to Mono” box is checked in your AAF export settings. Mono audio at 48 kHz is 768kbps, so that is correct. If you’re expecting stereo tracks to come over to Pro Tools, in my experience this has issues. Pro Tools AAFs should come in as mono tracks.

Yes. In your case, the Quad-core represents four actual processors, and each processor has two virtual cores. So 8 is correct in that dialog.

A general rule of thumb is that you want to be able to offer at least 2 GB of RAM to each process. If you have 6 GB RAM, I would set this to 3 instances. More memory would let you use more instances, and in that case, I always leave at least one full processor (2 virtual cores) free for other system tasks.

Yes – Using Compressor:
Create a preset resembling this:
and another preset resembling this:
These are what is needed for AVCHD on DVD. Drag your clip into Compressor into a job. Drag these presets onto the job. Click on the job and go to the Job Action tab and set it up like this:
This tells Compressor that you want to create the “Blu-Ray” on a regular DVD. Make sure to select your DVD burner in the dropdown and put a blank DVD in the drive.
If all goes correctly, your file should compress to the AVCHD spec (AVCHD video / AC3 audio) and burn to disc.

Not resampled. Just playing back slower. Hence the pitch change. The sample rate reflects the speed change – the original samples are unaffected. You can check this by reconforming to 25 and doing a difference check in the OS – the file should be identical to the original.
The OP asked why Cinema Tools isn’t compensating for the speed change with a pitch correction. The reason why is because it just doesn’t. The programs mentioned (Pitch N Time, etc.) are pitch correctors that are needed if the pitch change is a concern.

There is no “pro” version of Quicktime X. However, if you have your Snow Leopard install disc, you can install Quicktime Player 7 from that (it’ll appear in the Utilities folder) and since you have a FCS install, it should automatically recognize it and become “Pro”. I’ve done this, and then set my system to open all .mov files in Quicktime Player 7. Much easier on my constitution…

For your image distortion problem, what’s likely happening is that in your encoding preset in Compressor, it’s scaling the 2048×1080 to 1920×1080, making it quasi-anamorphic. Do you want it to preserve the aspect ratio, making a little bit of a letterbox? Or do you want to just crop the source on the sides and fill the 1920×1080 frame exactly?
To preserve the source aspect ratio, set this in Geometry:

You are likely running into the clean aperture setting in QuickTime Player. Your file is being encoded correctly, but being displayed in QTPlayer with clean aperture, which crops a bit out on all sides. You can either:
– go into “Show Movie Properties” in QT Player and change the display setting to “Encoded Pixels”
OR (more likely):
– change your Compressor preset to remove this clean aperture setting
Either one of these should give you your encoded pixels (all 1920×1080 of them) in the display aperture of QuickTime Player.
