FWIW 720 on the 7d looks like ass…. but that doesn’t answer your scaling problem.

I’ve had the touch for a year and I sort of like it sometimes but I find it not so responsive and it actually gets in the way at times instead of easing the control interface . I’m keeping it around to see if it can grow on me but I’ve had a very slo start with it so far.

I usea a track pad but if I click on the value I can scroll the values with my finger tip easily. Arrow Keys, Fingertips, I’m starting to realize there is a lot of flexibility built into FCP x

the arrow keys are perfect , but i also see that there is the possibility to map nudge keys for color pucks. I think the arrow keys are sufficient having perfectly dialed in what I needed to do color correct wise.

One should listen to Bill more than me. I did the move I described to get an errant project to Re link and it worked, but that doesn’t mean what I did is the best way to go about solving the delinking problem.

Relinking media that is in a library is one of those areas that is gray to me. Maybe there is a way to do this that I don’t know about. What I did was: with FCPX closed – in the finder click on library > reveal package contents, then dragged the folder outside of the library to some place where it is visible, This could be almost any place, but best to keep it on your drive with the library. Some people drag the folder to the favorites sidebar in the finder. Once done. reopen your project and relink media by pointing to the media folder that you have either placed in the finder side bar or outside of the library on your media drive.

When I ingest C-300 footage into FCPX, ( I have the canon plug in) I copy the material to a folder I designate, rarely one inside the FCPX library.
My point about the canon plug in is that you can side step the ” convert MXF to pro res step and go right into FCPX and a folder of your choosing . This is far less time consiuming that doing the conversion to pro res outside of FCPx.
Shot Put Pro is my go to soution for creating camera original backups/ offloading camera cards. The app isn’t designed to do anything other than that.

Get the canon XF plug in for FCPX and take the FCP 7 step out of your workflow.

I have edited short form HD video with the same mac mini set up you have using USB 3 drives, occasionally Firewire 800 and thunderbolt based drives and have had a decent time of it in most cases, but clearly the FW800 drives are the slowest. Don’t forget that when you are making transfers that the slowest drive in the chain will be the overall driver of transfer speed or lack there of. If you had 2 TB drives and were transferring between those two drives then you transfer speed would reflect that. If you are transferring from your boot drive to the external drives, the system drive might be the limiter.
Have you checked/repaired permissions on the drives you are using?
