So “something ” went off the rails with this experiment. My library file which I keep in dropbox has ballooned to 100-sh GB basically because there is original media now appearing in the Library even though the media locations are set to an external drive. The only thing I can think of that would have caused this media to show up in the library is that at one point when opened the project in the library, some media was off line for some reason. I relinked media pointing to the files on external drive. Is there some reason might have over looked that would have caused the relinked files o be incorporated into the library file which I am purposefully trying to keep small?

The ultimate goal is that if we have 5 people interviewed with basically the same questions, with the right searchable tagging scheme, some one could search the site and find all the answers to question about “X” and then be able to look at how the five people each responsed to that question.
Setting this up is easy in the browser in FCPX with Keywords, but creating a similar search capability inside of videos posted to a site is similar but not the same . I’m no web master dude, so hence the question.

Most of the media I currently use is 1080, but I run the gamut from SD archival stuff through 720, 1080 up to 4K and frequently all within one project. I don’t have latency issues. I even had some Canon C500 4K material shot at 60 P which is really heavy data wise and that sis not cause a problem, most likely since it was only a few minutes of a particular shot. If I had an extensive amount of canon 60P 4K it might be a completely different story with my set up.

I have a Pegasus r4 raid for my iMac which is 12 t.b. It has been flawless . Also have an owc 4 bay raid drive that uses four 2.5″ drives and is set up as a raid 5 . I used this as a travel drive when I was on a ship for a month shooting an expedition . This drive has also been a solid operator which is a testimonial considering how rough the travel was on the ship at times .

The media in my library is 684 GB which is spread across a lot of C300 footage, GoPro footage, stills, BMPC footage and Olympus point and shoot video. The media is a real salad. It took about 90 seconds to relink media when switching from one drive to another which I do not consider much of a penalty given that I now have a very portable set of media that I can work with while on the road and a set on a proper raid at my desk that I can switch between without creating a metadata mess. I’m liking this….

Having one library file with 2 identical sets of external median mobile and one desktop works. The re linking takes a bit when switching from one external set to the other but it works and allows me to keep my metadata , tagging and bagging up to date and clean.

Amen to that. I jest went through a funny bit where a library would show all my clips on one computer and something less than all my clips on another computer. The computer that was showing less than all my clips was set to “favorites” instead of all clips. Small things can make a big difference.
