The timeline index also works though selecting ranges does all the math for you-

Why not select a range in the browser , starting line to staring line , one lap and with that range highlighted, the duration will be displayed . Multiple ranges can be selected in a clip if your video recording is 10 laps , you can select 10 ranges of one lap each and you’re done.

Small format film definitely has a look which lends itself to certain things, however its hard for small format film to do anything outside that look, which I find quite limiting. Add to that the fact that the look of the film is highly dependent on the scanner used to convert the film image to digital . I’ve seen some remarkable S8 images transferred by Kinetta scanner, but those are not in abundance so you can’t count on getting that quality. I like film and I think the bigger the negative area, the better film gets. S8 is at the bottom of the ladder- sort of similar to 1/3″ sensors on video cameras, and when you take in the elevated cost and hassle of shooting, processing and transferring film, unless it serves a very specific purpose, I have to ask why bother?

January 6, 2017 at 7:37 pm in reply to: Can FCP create actual stills instead of the freeze frame mode? For some time I underutilized the timeline index until I had to solve this problem on one of my own projects, and discovered just how useful the TL index can be…. I happy it helped you out.

January 5, 2017 at 11:22 pm in reply to: Can FCP create actual stills instead of the freeze frame mode? Its possible to alter the duration of a batch of stills in the timeline by selecting those stills in the time line index , then control- D – enter new duration- then hit return and you will change the duration of all selected stills.

Does any one here have first hand experience with the FCPX hacks stuff? I can see that there are a number of features that are really useful, however I am wondering about the disclaimer about using the software on mission critical edit projects….

December 17, 2016 at 12:02 pm in reply to: 5K Retina iMac & 4K (+1080) multicam editing performance issues – GPU?Recently I cut a project (FCPX 10.2.1) for a client that involved 3 -ish angles – two were Canon XAVC format and the third was pro res from a BMPCC . All angles were 1080 23.98. I did not convert to optimized media.
I was cutting on an older iMac – 2013 vintage with the camera files on an external drive that was USB 3 . I know doesn’t sound so good. It wasn’t, but then I switched over to proxy media and with this under – spec’ed set up it was remarkably easy to cut then switch to original media for the export.
