I have a heap of digitized tape from an archival project and I used to use Andreas Kiehl’s little utility to fool X into thinking the digitized files was a camera archive and then in X you could import/ select chunks in the import window as you would from a camera files and just import those. Sadly the utility no longer works with Mojave…
But we’re drifting here a bit. I don’t really miss subclipping in X, Fav’ing, renaming fave and hiding. Rejects works for me. -
For stuff like this I generally use favorites and then change the favorite designation to something more meaningful that reflects the shot content. The selected range still exists and acts as a favorite, so if you search for favorites, you get your list of favorites but you’ve changed the name from ‘Favorite’ to ‘low altitude drone shot’ so if you are working in list view you have something to indicate shot content. Another step is to select clip sections between favorites, reject them, then hide rejected clips which hides all the dross and leaves you with just the chunks you like.

I’m on 10.4.8 on one machine (5K imac) still on mojave, and I see no difference in performance, certainly no loss of performance.

open one of your Pro Res files in Quicktime player. Then go to the inspector window and you will find the info you seek for bit rate.

I can’t answer your throttling question. I stumble across this issue with time machine about 2 years ago then found the terminal hack and tried it out. The hack really sped up time machine back ups.

There is a terminal hack for speeding up time machine back ups. Basically it involves inviting terminal, pasting in the correct bit of code to unthrottle time machine and bingo . time machine back ups go much faster. I’ve used it with out any bad results.

I just tried the same audio rig on my 2nd edit machine , a 2012 iMac and I don’t feel like levels are being throttled anywhere. Once my other machine 2014 iMac 5k frees up I’ll give it another shot.

I used to have a SD usb pre 2 and had similar problems getting decent level through the USB interface to X .
