  • The CF cards are more durable and rugged. I like using smaller cards so I can swap them out and download during the day, so I don’t have to spend all the time after the shoot downloading.

  • I have always used 32gig Extreme SanDisk Class 10 SD cards with 45MB/s since I bought my Mark3 and have NEVER lost a frame. I have never used CF cards.

    I would like to vote for the 16 to 35 2.8. You can use it on BOTH cameras and it is a PARAFOCAL lens to boot. Don’t know what at PARAFACAL lens is? Well google it…

    The sony ecm-44b lavalier mic is a broadcast quality professional quality mic. It is (almost) idiot proof and delivers excellent sound quality, even in noisy environments.

    I use the sony ecm-44b lavalier mic for interviews. It is powered by a AA battery and is connected to the Mark3 with the additional XLR to mini stereo adapter (right angled) It is a professional quality mic that can always be used with an external recorder or an external mixer.

    My question wasn’t “can I go direct to an external recorder?” I want to know if the QUALITY of the recording would visually better, IE: more resolution and detail and information. I know that recording 4:2:2 in ProRes would be better for green screen, but that is not why I would want to record to an external recorder with a codex other than H264. My original post was asking the question about WHY the Canon 5DMark11 video looks worse that SOny XDcam.

    The “hum” that you hear is probably from the all the water pumps that are just behind the subject. You can see one clearly by his right arm.

    I have used the Mark111 with both wireless and hard wired mics going DIRECTLY into the camera. The sound is fine for most situations, interviews. If I record in a situation where the sound is very loud (music) I would use a mixer with a good limiter to feed it into the camera or record double system. If the sound levels are not all over the place feeding a mic DIRECTLY into the Mark111 works perfectly. I also have bought a 3.5 mini plug (stereo) that splits the cable into (2) XLR inputs so you can use a boom mic with a lav, or two lavs. The only big problem with using a boom mic, in my case my Sennheiser 415 is that it has to be phantom powered which requires a mixer or a 48 volt phantom device. If you are just doing an interview with the Mark111 you can be a one man band and wear headphones coming out of the Mrk111 to check quality, but if you are using a boom and a lav you will need a sound man but you don’t need to go double system.

    The original file structure is H264. Here is an example on the exact quicktime file, FZ5A0320.MOV Yes the camera IS a media player. I play its H264 quicktime files through its HDMI port to the big screen and it looks great. I don’t want to use my laptop because it doesn’t have a HDMI port and if I use a conversion cable, it does not include sound.

    I am a Canon 5D Mark111 user (for 6 months) and I agree the video is soft. Much softer than we are used to seeing when we see it on the large monitors. A Sony EX1 or 3 will look sharper than the Canon. Phillip Bloom addresses this issue on one of his reports and his suggestion is to turn the sharpness DOWN all the way while shooting, and then and only then add sharpness NOT using FCP, but Adobe Premier Pro. Go figure… The sharpness sucks on the Canon 5D mark111 because of the anti alising filter that they have installed and the codex H264 that they are using. I have made numerous Time lapse videos with the mrk111 using LOW RES stills (1920x 1080) S2 setting and the sharpness of the finished video is 225.34 per cent sharper than the real time H264 out of the camera.
