Craig,
I think you’re wrong about the timecode. You were thinking about the actual files created, and not the camera’s ability to “live feed” a signal. The EX-3 has a BNC “timecode” out connector specifically so that you can “sync” this camera to common code in a multicam setup. That code, on that connector is essentially an “audio signal” which makes it “LTC” or Longitudinal Timecode.
The EX-3 ALSO has an SDI out connector which if I’m not mistaken packs BOTH LTC and VITC into the
signal stream. So, I guess the answer is the EX-3 does have BOTH VITC and LTC.Mark

Aric,
You WILL have problems trying to play a 3/4 inch deck into an AJA box UNLESS you send it through a TBC first. The low end 3/4 decks do NOT have a TBC. So… depending on which deck you have, you’ll either be successful or coming back here asking why doesn’t it work?
I’d agree with Richard. Make digibeta clones. 3/4 is a nasty format that was great in it’s day, but doesn’t interface well with the digital world.

You don’t mention what format the master tape is on: Digibeta, HDCAM, DVCPRO, D2, DV???
Regardless, digitizing can definitely strip off the CC material. Even easier, if you have two record decks “Clone” your master and turn “OFF” the “record” funtion for the captioning lines. Most “master” quality decks can do this. Refer to the manual as to how to work that function.
Captioning does NOT live in the same place as Timecode which is why the timecode reader/generator did not change it.

Wouldn’t hurt to study up on the difference between drop frame and nondrop frame timecode.
Here’s a link to start.

January 27, 2009 at 1:20 am in reply to: FCP Project Issues (Size or Length of project problem?)[George Costakis] “Basically, it’s a large narrative project so there are about 100 sequences and quite a large number of bins in use within the project and I’m wondering if through a combination of the number of those and the file size it’s causing some working issues.”
In a word… YES!
100 sequences? That’s a lot!
You know that FCP can have multiple projects open simultaneously. The idea of keeping “all your eggs in one basket” started out with AVID. FCP doesn’t have to work that way. I’d suggest having several projects which do NOT need to be open all the time. You can have a project for “Archival” sequences that just store your old sequences. Don’t tell me you need 100 sequences to edit effectively! You can have separate projects for music only… for grfx only… etc. You don’t need it all in one place.
Certainly trash prefs as suggested by shane, but really, your workflow is contributing to your poor performance issues. Reconsider how and what you put in a “project” and you can free up a lot of
memory… resulting in MUCH better performance.Good Luck.

Next season of MTV’s “The Real World” will be using the EX-1 in situations where the smaller form factor is a plus… like inside cars for example. Also, the “run and gun” nature of the show makes the EX-1 a good choice where a “low profile” is preferred, like in night clubs.
Our primary camera remains the XDCAM which records to a disc, but the EX-1 is a great addition to the production.
My personal opinion is that you would be NUTS to use RED for a reality show. Nuts! Great camera, but the media management is gonna kill you. Most reality shows generate MOUNTAINS of media, and @ 2K, you will need a HUGE SAN to hold it all. Even if you use the proxy workflow…. HUGE!
The EX-1 or EX-3 are great cameras, but you’re going to have media management issues with them too!
What are your network deliverable contractual requirements. I guarantee they don’t say, “Just give me a firewire drive” for all of the original media!!!! What’s your “archive” plans? What kind of media can you lay the cards off on to? And… did you budget for that expense? It can easily come close to the
cost of tape stock.I’d suggest that whomever is making this decision start doing some homework.

[denise quesnel] “should I charge a training fee for the time I spent teaching the replacement?”
Is this a trick question? YES! Your time = money. Period.
Your story sounds like something I’d hear on “Dr. Laura”. Snap out of it! You’re enabling a
“grinder”. Stop being a churchmouse and stand up for yourself. State your terms clearly and
unambiguously before any “booking”, and stick to them. Your self esteem will rise along with your
bank account.mark

We’ve loaded up our mac Pro’s with 2 -3 extra terrabyte drives internally, and that’s where the “local” goes. Even our older G5’s have a secondary terrabyte drive, and that’s what we use for “local”.
Never use the system drive.
Good luck with this workflow… I think you’ll like it.
Don’t forget to comb through the media BEFORE you move it and delete the “AV” files, the Bars and Tone, the “mistake” clips. That’s the benefit of this workflow.

You want to be looking at something like: Wirecast (now available from telestream) or
Boinx software. These programs are essentially switchers on your desk top. Wirecast goes even further and allows you to
literally go directly to the web.FCP is not the right tool for this job.
