  • FCP Project Issues (Size or Length of project problem?)

    Hi All,
So I’ve got a FCP project here that’s 48MB large and I’m starting to run into some interesting problems while working on it. Basically, it’s a large narrative project so there are about 100 sequences and quite a large number of bins in use within the project and I’m wondering if through a combination of the number of those and the file size it’s causing some working issues. The issues I’m having have been growing slowly, but it’s now becoming more and more alarming.

The minor problems are redraw errors, or that’s what they kind of seem like. For example, in the Browser, if I have all my bins minimized, but then I expand one of them and try to scroll down, it only goes halfway through the bin contents and it appears that it’s at an end of the scrollbar, even though I know that there are many more files below it. I know the bin contents are there because when you double click on the bin to open it in it’s own window, it allows you to see them all.

Also, when I’m dropping things into the Timeline, they’re not always showing up correctly and it forces me to restart for them to appear. Now, this of course means I have to save the project. Which, is where I’m having some more issues.

When I go to save, the project hangs and then locks up the computer. Soooo. Good news there. The other thing is, this particular problem is intermittent and sometimes even when it lets me save and I re-open the project, those changes aren’t saved. Which, is awesome.

Because of the weird redraw errors and just it’s odd finicky behavior within FCP, it makes me wonder if there is some limit to the amount of assets, bins, etc. you can have within FCP, or if the file size is an issue. I’ve looked around the COW, but there seems to be only one other post, and it’s pretty old, but it does look like they were having some similar issues to myself. I’ve also had these sort of symptoms before with other large projects with TONS of video assets, but nothing ever to this degree.

And here are the system specs:
MacPro 2x 3GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon 5GB RAM
    OSX 10.4.11
    FCP 6.0.4

Any help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks All!

Well, 48MB isn’t too big. And finickiness can be solved a lot by trashing your preferences. Make sure to save your Keyboard layout and window layout first. And move your FAVORITE effects from the FAV folder to a new bin in your project. You can move them back later.

Shane’s Stock Answer #44: FCP acting weird or unusual. Just not like is normally should

If the program was working fine, and now isn’t, or just isn’t working the way it should, the first things to do are:

    1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at https://www.fcprescue.com and run it.

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html

    2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.

    3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.

    4) (optional) Do the Hokey Pokey and turn your self about. Results may vary.

    George,

How many sequences do you have open? You should not have more that about four at any one time.

    Do you own Disk Warrior?

    In a word… YES!

    100 sequences? That’s a lot!

You know that FCP can have multiple projects open simultaneously. The idea of keeping “all your eggs in one basket” started out with AVID. FCP doesn’t have to work that way. I’d suggest having several projects which do NOT need to be open all the time. You can have a project for “Archival” sequences that just store your old sequences. Don’t tell me you need 100 sequences to edit effectively! You can have separate projects for music only… for grfx only… etc. You don’t need it all in one place.

Certainly trash prefs as suggested by shane, but really, your workflow is contributing to your poor performance issues. Reconsider how and what you put in a “project” and you can free up a lot of
memory… resulting in MUCH better performance.

    Good Luck.
