TC reference is the lifeblood of many workflows… especially in Reality TV. Having a time of day reference on multi cameras over months of shooting is critical to being able to find anything… ever! Ignoring this
fact because its not part of your world doesn’t mean that it’s NOT a mission critical feature for many NLE users. Overlooking this fact because it doesn’t meet your “the future is here” thesis of FCP= X challenges the credibility of the rest of your evangelizing.

If you’re trying to bring in converts to the cause, you’re NOT going to do it by making statements like that.

I was a PAID intern through out all four years of college. I credit my current career to my positive internship experience.

I’m a firm believer in PAYING the interns. In my case, I couldn’t have taken the job for free. I needed the money I made in the summer to live on throughout college. But more importantly, I believe that there’s a subtle difference in the mindset of BOTH employer and intern when there’s a paycheck at stake. From the employer’s POV, they feel that they shouldn’t waste the money just having the interns xerox or get coffee. The incentive is to put them to work on some valuable tasks. from the intern’s POV, the money allows them to NOT have to take a “hamburger” job just to make cash, and actually allows them to gain valuable professional work experience.

I actually do NOT think that this ruling will be the end of internship programs. I believe that the NUMBER of positions will decrease to a rational level, and therefore the quality of the interns will INCREASE. Less wandering souls and more focused, driven, determined young professionals.

Call me an optimist, but I think this is a GOOD thing.

Not exactly true, sir!

Most 3/4″ decks had what was called a “dub” cable. Here’s an example of one:

This output separated the “Y/C” signals… creating essentially a component signal. NOT exactly
what we now know as a”component” recording, but close.

So… if you want the best possible signal from a 3/4 ” deck, use the dub cable output through a TBC (Time Base Correctors for you young uns) . Some TBC’s actually had “dub” input connectors.

Here in LA, in the “reality TV” world, AVID seems to be the NLE of choice. THere are a couple of reasons for this. Every reality show that I know of employs large teams of editors, assist, and story people all sharing the same media/ projects/ metadata. “X” just can’t compete in this arena. (Please don’t tell me about “sparse disc images”!)

The second reason is “tape delivery”. While many networks are fully embracing “file based delivery”, there’s still plenty of requirements for a HDCAM or HDCAMsr master. I will just say that “X” has NOT prioritized any kind of VTR interface. (third party? Puhleeze!)

Finally, while it’s true that many of the large “post houses” are now history, the production companies that used to patronize them are now doing it all in house. THe work is still there… it’s just moved to a different address.

The entertainment business is changing by the minute. New business models. New distribution platforms. New technology. Which NLE to use is actually the least of my concerns these days!
