  • I’ll just go ahead and pile on here. That you’re even asking tells me that you’ve never done this type of work before and you don’t have any idea what’s required to do it right. To even approach a bare minimum standard, you’re going to have to drop at least $20,000 on a Mac Pro, Kona Card, RAID and professional broadcast monitors.

And let me anticipate your next comment:

“Yeah, I know, that’s how it’s SUPPOSED to be done, but I’m looking for a cheaper entry-level system just to get me started.”

$20K *IS* the cheaper entry-level system.

LOL! Whenever I see someone post in the Motion forum about anything even remotely related to 3D, before I even open the thread I ask, “I wonder what program Noah is going to tell them they should be using instead of Motion.”

And I LOL every time, cause you never let me down. 😉

  • Have you filed this with Apple?

For a 4K workflow, I would consider the “extras” you listed as requirements.

Don’t bring it into iTunes. From the manual:

Mac OS X recognizes each track on a standard audio CD as an individual AIFF file. These files can be copied directly from a CD to your hard disk and then imported into Final Cut Pro without any conversion.

Time is something I really don’t have much of. But if you have any questions, feel free to email me: mark@fwcflorence.com

I use my 27″ iMac 4-core for HD video editing and I love it! Performance-wise, it feels exactly the same to me as editing on my 8-core Mac Pro, but that gorgeous 27″ screen and the magic mouse just seem to make for a much more pleasurable editing experience.

Granted, there are two potential deal-breakers with this machine: the network chip they use is not capable of jumbo frames so you’re not going to get acceptable throughput if you’re trying to access large files over an ethernet SAN. And you obviously can’t install a Kona or BlackMagic card for a broadcast display.

But since I deal exclusively with local storage and edit HD for non-broadcast delivery, it’s a dream machine for me.

What makes you think 3 is the max?

Bobby, could I suggest that you post your questions to the Final Cut Pro Basics forum?
