Final cut pro is slow
My final cut pro is acting really goofy. When I play back video on the timeline the video won’t play through cleanly. The video will stutter on the timeline and come to a grinding halt.
I changed it from Safe RT to Unlimited RT and it still has problems playing normally. I deleted the preferences. I restarted the computer… etc.I don’t think it’s a RAM issue. It encodes the video and plays back the video files properly.
It is final cut pro 5.0.1
I have a Mac Pro. OS x 10.4.11
Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5
Memory 2.3 GB Ram -

HD? SD? Codec? Where is your media — internal drive, system drive, external drive? If external, how is it connected — Firewire 400? Firewire 800? USB 1.1? USB 2.1? SCSI? eSATA?
2GB RAM isn’t enough to do any serious editing in FCP. I recommend 8GB minimum with all modules of the same specs and manufacturer.

it is SD, we edit DV footage off the USB hard drive 2.0. I know, I know. It’s so horrible. Blah.
But, it works perfectly on my other two macs. I haven’t upgraded my RAM on my other macs so it can’t be the RAM.

Well, start at the beginning. 😉
What are the specs of your 3 Macs? (Make, Model, Processor(s), RAM, OS version, HD size(s), etc.)

So how do you get your FCP system to utilize anywhere near 8gigs of RAM?
I think 3 is the max, and you won\’t find it using that much too often.
But 8 is great, and will permit you to run AE, FCP, illustrator, Mail, Safari, PS, Fetch, Compressor, etc all at once. Heck, I used to run all that with 3 gigs, but with AE or Ps in the mix, you\’ll find page ins and outs occuring quite a bit when switching apps.

What makes you think 3 is the max?

It’s a PowerMac G5 the main hard drive is 250gb the second is 750gb. The processor is dual 2.3 GHz.
It doesn’t do it on every video. I’ll have to experiment more and see why it’s doing that.
