Ive just had another look at it, and its true, you can set your timeline paramters it behaves, by default, as though audio tracks are unlinked.

I would prefer them to be linked AND have the ability to overwrite on one track of the linked stereo pair if I want to. I dont see the reason for PREVENTING users from having that freedom.

I like the linked for the sake of trimming both tracks and video simultaneously, but find it clumsy to have to create custom settings or perform an unlinking operation each time I would like to have that freedom, and then having to switch back each time I want to trim all tracks together.

What is the purpose of this feature if not to protect users from themselves?

Thanks, yep, it seems either disconnecting the stereo pair or locking one track will do the trick… I would much prefer to have the speed and freedom of not having to perform extra steps and be given the responsiblility of making my own mistakes. I really dislike the way permiere and fcp protect users from themselves… a bit dumbed down methinks.

yep, that definitely does the trick for being able to overwrite onto one part of a stereo pair of tracks.

the other issue, which I think is a bug with the way FCP/XDCAMTransfer work together, is the impored MOV files are centre panned. Not such a big deal when you are in FCP, but I had used compressor to render the mov files out as aiff, and unfourtunately could not figure how to get compressor to pan them so the aiff files were stereo. The resulting aiff files were L&R mixed on both ch1 and ch2.

any bright ideas on how to overcome that one most welcome.

they are so full of crap,
watching bbc hd, the noise and artifacting is sooo much worse than anything an ex1 could possibly produce in normal lighting conditions. I wonder how they figure these standards out…

what a great programme…
if you need to sync, have a very good look at this one… only $30 and well worth it.
you can do it in an easy mode or create rules and save the project so you can run the same parameters whenever you want, and you can even schedule when to run them… excellent.

yeah, that is probably the smartest way…

in the last day ive bought chronosync which is a very good app for syncing on osx, seems to work very well.

also ive bought a lacie 2gb esata firewire800 usb2 raid 5 box which will do as you suggest, though i will still do some syncing where i have to work locally, for example on the train where i will not be able to use the lacie box.

I have downloaded CatDV pro and am trying it out. It creates markers on FCP clips like movielogger does, but has a more powerful interface and if you do a search using CatDV outside of FCP, you can find any annotation in a clip using the search, but still HAVE to use that app, so you cannot search using Finder UNLESS you create an XML file as well.
If you search “This Mac” and “Contents” Finder will pick up the relevant details in the XML file which you can then import or drag and drop to FCP. Of course one would have to be very careful to not delete the xml files, and also it is a bit messy IMO to have media files separate from the metadata files.

Does FCP server wrap the metadata in the MOV file in such a way that finder would see it on any mac, or does one have to be running their client software to be able to find files in Finder?

I tried the movielogger. What its good for is someone who does not want to hold up an FCP system to do logging… but in the end all you end up with is an FCP clip which has annotated markers – which I can do in fcp. This product allows you to search from within FCP… conversely

Mac digital clip library seems a lot deeper, can create proxies etc, but your searches (from what I can tell) take place using their software, so you cannot search the metadata from fcp.

I guess this is the issue. The metadata is either fcp or osx searchable, not both. I would need both so I could search existing projects or search in the finder for clips that are not in any project.
