    hello guys
im trying to replace a whole lot of VO with a new VO… but have some problems

1/ i cant find a way to monitor just A1 in the source viewer, it always plays both A1 and A2

2/ once i insert both audio tracks to the timeline i cant find a way to delete just one track of the stereo pair (i know, i should only insert the one I want… but anyway…)

3/ i cant seem to be able to insert just one audio track over the existing audio which is stereo, when i press F10 to overwrite, fcp gives me a message: “operation not allowed” (this is astonishing, i cannot insert audio on one track over A1 if it is part of a stereo pair which is on A2? unbelievable!)

I dont do this often, so excuese the ignorance, and im sure there must be something im missing here, but dont have the time to read the manual… so help if poss, thanks guys,

    Mark.

If the clip name is underlined on both tracks they are linked. Unlink the audio Apple (Command) L. If the clips are stereo they will have the small green arrows pointing at each other. Option L to make stereo pair or not stereo pair. If the clips are not stereo you can Option click them and delete.

    Hi John,
yep, that definitely does the trick for being able to overwrite onto one part of a stereo pair of tracks.

the other issue, which I think is a bug with the way FCP/XDCAMTransfer work together, is the impored MOV files are centre panned. Not such a big deal when you are in FCP, but I had used compressor to render the mov files out as aiff, and unfourtunately could not figure how to get compressor to pan them so the aiff files were stereo. The resulting aiff files were L&R mixed on both ch1 and ch2.

any bright ideas on how to overcome that one most welcome.

If you lock one of the sound tracks in the timeline you should be able to delete the other without any problem.

[Bev Nixon] “If you lock one of the sound tracks in the timeline you should be able to delete the other without any problem.”

    Hi Bev,
Thanks, yep, it seems either disconnecting the stereo pair or locking one track will do the trick… I would much prefer to have the speed and freedom of not having to perform extra steps and be given the responsiblility of making my own mistakes. I really dislike the way permiere and fcp protect users from themselves… a bit dumbed down methinks.
    cheers

    Hi
That’s not how it seems to me – FCP is just providing an efficient workflow based on your setting choice during Log&Capture/Log&Transfer as to whether you want linked stereo pairs, or double-mono, or multiple variants of either, and your track behaviour choices in the Sequence setup procedure.

Set up what you want/need, and it gives you the workflow – and the option to vary it as required…
I don’t see that as ‘dumbed down’ 😉

    Hi Paul
Ive just had another look at it, and its true, you can set your timeline paramters it behaves, by default, as though audio tracks are unlinked.

I would prefer them to be linked AND have the ability to overwrite on one track of the linked stereo pair if I want to. I dont see the reason for PREVENTING users from having that freedom.

I like the linked for the sake of trimming both tracks and video simultaneously, but find it clumsy to have to create custom settings or perform an unlinking operation each time I would like to have that freedom, and then having to switch back each time I want to trim all tracks together.

What is the purpose of this feature if not to protect users from themselves?
    Mark
