    Well thought out.ut.

My order of CS5.5 is in the mail as I post this. Premiere is not the Photoshop of NLEs, but I can’t pass up the value, and I like having more tools.

I haven’t used Avid for about 6 years now. Frankly it always felt like I was driving the family minivan when I used it. It may be different now, I always associate Avid with safe and dependable.

FCX isn’t the family car. I’ve actually been having fun using it, but I’m getting worn out and frustrated with the workarounds and bugs.

So what’s more likely to happen. WIll Adobe make Premiere the Photoshop of NLE’s, or will Apple will make FCX the coolest professional editing app that will revolutionize the industry the way FCP has?

I’m not placing any bets, but neither company is out of the running. Apple has such a great track record for innovation, it’s why I’m not giving up on them. I’m looking for every chance I can to work with FCX, but I’m also investing in CS5.5, and meanwhile I’ve also got FCP7 which is 32bit, but it’s a rock and I know exactly what I can do with it.

  • Hmmm… I wonder what the message is here.

They could be saying “we were wrong and we are sorry, please accept our apology.”
That doesn’t seem too likely since they waited so long to react to the backlash that was incendiary in the beginning, and has settled down to a constant burn. They should have done this 4 weeks ago.

Perhaps it’s taken this long for them to see their market share start to drop and keep dropping as busineses are fleeing to Avid and Adobe, and they’re trying to stop the bleeding.

Maybe they’re having trouble with the upgrade since there is so much that needs to be done, and they know how important it is to get this one right, and they’re trying to buy themselves more time with what they think is a generous gesture.

Maybe they’re panicking and grasping at straws. (not likely).

In my mind, if they discounted the software at half price like Adobe and Avid, they would be likely to sell more than twice as many boxes then they would at $999. Everyone loves a firesale, and it would feel much more like a real value. How many will be willing to pay full price for software that’s EOL’d, with a successor that may be years away from being ready for prime time.

This doesn’t feel like contriteness to me. It was necessary, but still feels too little too late.

However, it was “the reversal of a Custer decision”, which nearly never happens with the Cupertino crew, so we can count that as a point for us.

And it’s never too late for them to surprise us.

I still like the idea of “Buy FCX, and get FCS3 for free. They would fly off the shelves, show their contrition, and cement their dominance.

I’m still hopeful that FCX will rock my world, without compromise, crashes or all the workarounds.

    Someday.

  • Thanks for the great forum. I have been looking for as much intelligent discussion about FCX and editing as I can find, and I have to say I was especially impressed with Larry Jordan and my brain is still trying to catch up with where Michael Cioni took it.

I’m very curious about what a company like Keycode is telling their clients. Were you guys taken by surprise by this? Are you telling people to wait and see?

I’m guessing that you are selling a lot of Avid these days. Even more with what could be a mass exodus from Final Cut.

  • Thanks for the post Craig. It’s quite a long, rambling show, but always useful.

That trick about creating a compound clip of the audio is very clever. Is it practical? Only if you never need to go back and change anything. I imagine editing the audio inside the compound clip without being able to see anything might be difficult.

I have to send out split channel files for output to tape. Ordinarily it’s not a big problem to use the timeline index (which I love) and selectively disable clips so I can export my “stem tracks”. It becomes a problem if the clips are in a compound clip. Thankfully FCX let me detatch the audio from the compound clips, so they all became visible, without unnesting the layered video. But God forbid I had to go back and change something inside the compound clip.

I think we need to start a new forum “Final Cut Pro Workarounds”.

[Craig Seeman] “Apple needs to provide the hooks in order to make it more broadly useful”

Just wait. That upgrade is right around the corner and it will answer all our questions, fix all of our problems, and make the haters sorry they just spent money to switch to Avid or Adobe.

(I myself am expecting my Creative Suite to arrive from B&H in a couple of days. Not switching by any means, but it never hurts to have the extra tools. Even if I don’t want to touch my original clips in AE5.5!)

Strange workflow going backwards. At least going backwards saved you some keystrokes.

I’m curious. What kind of codec was your footage, how many camera angles did you have and how did FCX play all of those streams? Did you switch to proxy?

August 31, 2011 at 7:03 pm in reply to: Quicktip Reconnecting Offline Clips

Yes, but it doesn’t help with reconnecting the clip if FCX doesn’t want to do it. Am I right?

I’ve found that even if FCX seems to know where the file is, if something significant has changed, it’s GAME OVER.

So I did a little test. I imported a clip into FCX, without having it copy the media to the event folder. The location in the info box points to the link to the original media. If I move the original file, the link follows it. That’s good.

If I change the name of the original clip, the link still follows it. It doesn’t go offline.

    Still good.

I made a copy of the file and deleted the original. When I reopened FCX, it was naturally offline. The location in the info box in FCX still showed the file in the event folder (which was a link to the original material). I “revealed in finder” the offline clip, and it took me to the alias. When I double-clicked the alias it gave me the option of fixing the alias. I fixed it by taking it to the copy of the deleted clip I made. Now the alias is fixed (I can double-click the alias in the event folder and it plays in quicktime), but it’s still offline in FCX.

Now this is interesting: I closed FCX, I opened the event folder on my hard drive, replaced that alias with the duplicated media file I had made for safety, giving it the same name as the original link. Opened FCX and it’s back online.

It might be enough to put the original media back in the event folder. I’m praying that we’ll stop the conjecturing, and that Apple will give us a way to force a relink.

I think the only thing we can do now, is make sure we keep copies of the original media, in case something changes to corrupt the delicate linkages, and we can use time machine to make sure our project folder is backed up every 10 minutes, so we can go back in and pull out an older version of the project should the worst happen.

I now need to get back to work.

And how was that pastors conference in Juarez?

    I wish.

We didn’t sign NDAs. They only showed us what is out, and teased us with the thought of what might come.

Somebody has to be the photoshop of NLE’s. Apple isn’t right now.

the trick is to hit the little icon in the effects window and it opens up a very cool graphical interface that allows you to control the effect with virtual dials and sliders, and hear the effect adjustments in real time.

I still miss my normalization gain. ;-(

[Jordan Mena] “Yeah! And the audio sounds pretty decent. Did you mix it yourself in FCPX or did you shell out the extra $300 for autoduck OMF export?”

No OMF. All mixed in FCX. I’m not really an audio guy, but I just try to keep the levels balanced, and select the right music from the production library we use.

I’m trying to dive into the logic effects that FCX comes with. There’s a lot of power in there.

With great power comes great responsibility.

Thx… we generally get a day and a half for a piece like this. I may have spent a little more time tweaking it, so I’m sure it was more like two work days. I’m still adding in extra time for the learning curve, but otherwise I’m pumping it out.

Yes, all in x, using photoshop and motion as well for some fun effects.

Knowing the issues and workarounds definitely helps. Not as much as an update would help.

Since we still archive on tape, I have to do my little dance where I turn tracks on and off and export various aiff files to get my audio streams. That’ll get fixed as well in the impending update.
