September 21, 2011 at 3:11 pm in reply to: Apple Pro Training Series: Final Cut Pro X – digital editionThanks for the post.
Remember the good old days, when you would actually get documentation with your software? I have fond memories of having both a hard copy and a pdf of my Apple FCP manual. Additionally, that manual was quite thorough and comprehensive.
Now we get a help file, that only works if you’re online, with information that is spotty at best.
Is Apple passing this off to third parties as well? (And where are they getting their information?)
Is it just me?

Nice job Jason.
You did this in iMovie pro? #sarc
How long did this take you?
Such nice warm feelings, almost makes up for Comcast’s criminal recompression of our HD streams to fit more in the cable bandwidth.

[David Roth Weiss] “To most human beings I know the term “rich” does not imply different, it implies better.”
Yes, and the term “version ten” implies three steps up from version 7, not a giant step sideways. #snark

The only reasons I can see for changing the editing paradigm would be either to give us more control, or make the workflow easier, right?
They clearly haven’t given us more control. It seems like we have the same amount of control or slightly less.
As far as making things easier, I find it terribly ironic that they went from a paradigm where you do one thing, edit your shots down into tracks that you can see, and Apple makes the workflow much more confusing. Now I need to decide whether I want to make a clip a storyline, or connect it to something, and where do I need the connection to happen, and when do I need to change it, and I need to press buttons to see the hidden audio to make adjustments to it, and I need to press more buttons to see the opacity line in the timeline, and I need to open a clip in timeline view to adjust the audio tracks separately.
This is light-years from “easier.”
I understand the paradigm. I’m trying to make it work, but I truly don’t see how this is one speck easier.
Going back to my first observation in this post about the possible reasons for the paradigm shift. I left one out: arrogance. Absolute, abject arrogance with extreme prejudice.
I just got an e-mailed apology from Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix. It’s refreshing to see a company own their actions and when necessary, say “I’m Sorry.” Not “we’re sorry” but “I’m sorry.” I still have to face the fact that my netflix pricing is changing, but they explained it to me like I mattered to them. Maybe if Apple had more than professional editors jumping ship, and their stock went down, we’d see the same action? I don’t know.
I’m still withholding final judgement until I see an update, but I’m frustrated.

$500 for episode? No thanks, I don’t encode that many wmv files.
I have parallels on my MBP. Is there some cheap windows software that I can run in windows that will speed up the process? Just thinking.

[Craig Seeman] ”
There is no “secondary” until you make it.”I just had an idea Craig. I think it would answer both of our issues. What if we could lock the primary storyline? After that, any editing we would do would take place in a secondary storyline? Then my ins and outs won’t happen in the primary. We can drop b-roll to our hearts content, and it will all happen above the primary.
It’s interesting that there is no locking function in FCX. This could be a good reason to add it.
I’ll submit it to feedback.
Bottom line for me- in FCP, it always seemed like whatever I needed, someone already thought about and there was some cool workflow to make it happen, usually two or three. I thought it was brilliant. It does everything and more.
In FCX, I am constantly surprised and befuddled by a strange workflow because the interface doesn’t act like I would expect it to. It doesn’t do everything, and frequently does it with less.
I wonder if we’re holding our breath for the end of summer, which would give Apple until Thursday to get in under the deadline.
I honestly wouldn’t mind if they took a little longer and knocked our socks off, but not without saying something.

Again, I was referring to the ability to use the I and O key to set edit points to the secondary storyline.
It seems to me that if I have selected the secondary storyline, I should be able to JKL to my edit points and then I and O. FCX selects the clip in the primary storyline.
This is why I try to do as much editing on the primary timeline.

[Tom Wolsky] “It’s a very common technique I use when working with B-roll.”
Yes I agree. I use it all the time.
What I find awkward is the need to use my mouse to set the range in the secondary timeline. I can’t get any accuracy unless I zoom way in. Of course I could slap down a clip and trim it later, but that can be awkward.
Or have you found a way to use the keyboard to set an in and out on the secondary timeline?
