I’ve been exporting 4 channels of audio ever since FCPX came up with “Roles”.

I just did a test, and it was fairly easy to export, add an audio track, then select which audio roles I wanted to go to the new channel.

If you ever have a need for any stem audio, why not put some of that onto 3 and 4. You can Easily send any role to any channels.

In this one, I have all the roles sent to ch 1 and ch 2, soundbites to 3 and dialogue to 4.

When you assign roles to the audio channels you’re exporting, the roles in the pulldown menu toggle when you select them so you can assign more than one role to each channel.

As for the 16 bit audio vs the 24 bit, you will probably need to create a compressor template for that.

Quick nod to editing b-roll in the V1 track. It’s easy-peasy and Bret, it is NOT destructive, in the way I understand destructive.

Once I lay down my “A-roll” soundbite, I select the portion of the bite I want to cover up. Perhaps for a 10 second bite, I want to cover the last 5 seconds. I park the skimmer where I want the b-roll to start, press “I” for In. I find a b-roll shot and hit Q to connect this to the timeline.

Now the easy-peasy part is to drop this connected clip into the primary storyline (OPT-CMD Down-arrow). It automatically covers the video, leaves the audio extended, and it’s simple to take this long b-roll shot and chop it up either using the replace from start (or end) or the D key to put just the shots I want into the cover.

I find editing in the secondary storyline awkward. I cannot use the I and O keys to mark a selection.

Trust me Dionne, connect a long-ish clip onto the timeline with that Q key, then drop it and chop it.

Need to edit a soundbite into bits to clean up a bunch of ums, ahs and pauses? Trim it up in the primary, set an I and an O to cover as much of the video as you’d like. Connect a longish clip with the Q key, then select that connected clip and drop it to the primary. Any clip in the primary that was covered by the connected clip is now an audio only clip. Works great.

Also I recommend that you never detatch your audio from the video unless you absolutely must.

When I first started using FCPX, I got so frustrated when I could hear audio, but not see it. I started expanding clips until I found it. I don’t get frustrated as much. I’ve mapped the “Expand A/V clips for all splits”. This will show me what I need to see without expanding every single clip.

They ought to have a marking for a clip that’s hiding audio. Maybe in the next version.

Nice to know they are still working on it.
Have they really NOT been working it all this time?

Request:
-keystroke for audio crossfades (extend audio and add fade?) across all selected clips.
-real time audio level fader control
-filters applied across all roles
-ipad control with real-time fader recording

I can’t tell you how much time I take extending the audio and applying the fades!

Shift – D, and Shift – Q work just fine for #2, and like Jeremy said, you can map the Replace from end.

I too miss the old replace.

You can also select the compound clip in the timeline and shift-F to match frame to the browser clip, then opt-T to open the compound in timeline view.

Shift-F is very fast.

I often use CC to start the name of my compound clips, so I can put CC in the search field, and I get a quick list of compound clips.

There’s just too many good ways to do things in FCP-X.

Now if we could just get them to add a “used” parameter to the smart clip collection.

Of course, it’s a little different these days. A tape burn meant you popped a vhs tape in the deck, turned on the tc window on the beta deck and hit play and record. An hour later and you’re done.

I have a rather elaborate dance I do to get the tc burn because I have 380 clips in this project, and I like to put the clip number in the burn window along with the timecode. I’ve got the encoding down to better than real time.

9.5 hours of footage burned, encoded, labelled and uploaded… 2.5gb in my dropbox. Would you charge $200 for that?

by the way… hats off to David Heidelberger and his very useful app Clip Labeller, which allows me to export an xml, flip it through his app, and bring it back into fcp7 to add a text track above each clip with the clip name. Awesome.

Ahhhhh, third party solutions. I’m curious about the minuses. And 59 bucks sounds pricy. Worth it?

I would think there would be a way to use Automator to create backups.

I was afraid of that. I have about 140 of them.

Interesting however, when I try to open them in Motion 4, it crashes. When I try to open them in Motion 5, I need to relink the media, but then it acts as expected.

However, if I save the file in Motion 5, it won’t show up in the FCP project. I get the “missing media files”

I suspect that when I exported the entire FCP project that it didn’t relink the files inside the motn clips, and for some reason I can’t relink them using Motion 4, only Motion 5, which doesn’t show up in FCP7.

I could set up a boot drive with FCP5 and Motion 3. It could help me if I ever need to reopen anything else from the far far distant past (only 4 years ago).

I imagine the keyboard shortcuts update similarly to the previous update. I found that they had updated the default keyboard shortcuts, but since I was using my personal set, it didn’t change, so I had to set my default to the new set, and re-do the modifications I had done for my personal set.

Anyone have a better way to do this? There isn’t a way to merge keyboard sets?

I’m excited about the update. Downloading right now.
