Oh… That’s easy….
You need to go into the setup menu and turn off iLink. Hit the menu button, go to the double arrows menu (IN/OUT REC). Go down to iLink Set and press EXEC. Now, it will say HDV-DV CONV. Set that to OFF and press EXEC to set it. Select OK, then press the MENU button to finish.
Now FCP will recognize your deck for HDV capture. That’s it! You’ll need to do the reverse for capturing DV or DVCAM footage.

In this case, I’d capture the tapes to match the discs.
But normally, the question that would need to be asked is… what is the majority of the footage shot on IMX50 or DVCPro50? Based on that answer, your workflow should follow the majority.
BUT…. Since our workflows involve discs, its better to stay with that and match it. Now, there is a time when you don’t want to do that and this is working with HDV or XDCAM HD. In this case, if the footage has to be mixed, capture in something like ProRes or DVCProHD so that it is friendlier to edit.

And one more thing….
ANYTIME you use an interface that is firewire, you MUST (absolutely without a doubt) have a firewire card in your Mac or Macbook Pro before ANY of these will work correctly.

Well, there you go…
You almost answered your own question after filling in the blanks some more.
Your issue is with your eSATA connection. I may be the drive but I would bet that your issue is with the eSATA card or its drivers.
Who manufactured your eSATA card? Are you sure that its Mac compatible and edit capable? This isn’t always the case. Always check with the manufacturer if the product can be used with FCP and handle the throughput needed to edit. Inexpensive cards are always the best way to go. I would look at the card first before trashing anything else.

Hardware check is a start…
But you really need to run something like TechTool Pro or DiskWarrior to check and/or fix your hard drives.

I would suggest that you take the advice of Rafael and fix your hard drives and repair your permissions. Sounds like you have a serious hard rive issue here.

Ok… The question here is… How is the drive hooked up to this drive dock and who is the manufacturer of the drive dock?
I ask this because you cannot use a USB 2.0 external drive unit to edit, ONLY firewire 400, firewire 800, eSATA, SCSI160, or fiber channel. USB is the speed but not the continuous throughput needed to edit.
Secondly, if your capture drive is almost full, this will be a major issue, too.
Do you have one of the PDW-U1 decks? If not, uninstall the 2.9 software and install version 2.8. 2.9 was created sole for the U1 drive for a firmware update..

Do you have one of the U1 decks connected thru USB?
If not, the 2.9 software is not for you. The 2.9 update is only for the U1 decks to upgrade their firmware. You’ll need the 2.8 version to get the complete software package needed for FCP.

You’ve just run into the issue that all of us face from time to time… What do we do?
Here’s the thing… You want your timeline to be letterboxed for output, right? Well, if you drop DV footage into your timeline and its pillarboxed, then when you downconvert to SD, your DVD footage will still be pillarboxed and now letterboxed,, too.
To keep this from happening, you’ll have to either upconvert your DV footage to full frame HD or just live with the square frame around your DV footage. You may have to do a little pan and scan on it to make it look right but downconverting the DV footage will look fine at broadcast.

You won’t see any standalone Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray is a stepping stone for downloadable HD video which is now a reality with iTunes, albeit, not as good as Blu-Ray but that’s what the industry is moving towards.
