I think I would try to get Apple to replace the system board. It sounds to me like a main system board problem, not software. If you have already replaced everything else, that’s the last thing and if the computer is still under warrenty, Apple shouldn’t have any problems doing this.

It’s just a video card redraw problem. To correct this, zoom in or out of your timeline to redraw the screen.

Well, Brian…. That’s where if you pay a little more for the exacat program, you’ll get what you want. MacCaption DV has a list price of $1995. And this is for DV only, so there is a way to caption DV correctly without the need for a hardware encoder. Yes, the price is about the same as software with a hardware encoder but its all done within the computer with no generational loss of having to make a tape and caption from that.

Oh yes… there is a DV version that you use with DV footage. The program just creates your captioning in a Quicktime format then its up to you in import it into FCP and render the timeline. From there, you can write it to any tape format that you have. But, of course, the DV version is for DV only.

Well… you have to add up the amount of captioning you are going to have to do this year and total it up. Then check on the rates of captioning and compare those. We do about 39 shows a year, so $3000 is pretty cheap compared to 39 x $300 which is about just under $12,000. If you only do a couple a year, then a captioning company would be your best bet.

Here’s a cost effective solution to your captioning problem. Check out http://www.cpcweb.com and look at MacCaption NLE. Its a stand-alone software solution that captions your quicktime files and then you can export the caption only track and import it into FCP and render your timeline to a complete program with captioning to be output using your favorite capture card like the AJA Kona2. It works with everything since FCP can pass caption information in a timeline. Give it a look see.

Ok…. that does sound better but these specs aren’t advertised really well. I do want to appologize for my ignorance on this. But let me ask… what do you do with the footage after it had been aquired and edited. Aren’t the cards a little too expensive to just sit on the shelf? How do you archive the footage? What format do you use for this? These are all of the questions we had when we first saw P2. It sounds great but do you just blow off all of your footage each time you need to use the camera?

That’s the reason why XDCAM looked so good for us. It’s digitally based and disc based. There’s no cueing up to the end of the tape and no way to overwrite what you have taped. Yes, P2 does this also, but XDCAM discs are only $30 each, therefore you can afford to shelve them.

I had a similar situation with my machine but it was 7 frames off. Strange about yours, mine was very consistant in the 7 frame offset. I’d just have to set my inpoint 7 frames earlier than I really wanted. I think it has something to do with the firewire processing and the age of your computer.
