No… Everything we shoot is drop frame. The machines even specify that they are drop frame. But I do use firewire machine control on my HDV deck and 9-pin serial on my XDCAM HD deck. I use the same cature settings for both but I have to change machine control for each deck. If I forget to change machine control and try to batch capture with the wrong machine control selected, I get the drop/non-drop frame error message every single time. If I click cancel and change my machine control, then batch digitize, most of the time the clips are fine. BUT on occassions, my timecodes and reel names will be lost.
Getting weird isn’t it…. I trash my preferences, sometimes multiple time in a day, restart the computer and zap the PRAM. Then the computer will work fine until it happens again. Spooky….
Now, I restart FCP and I get an error message telling me that my media is not optimized for FCP any more that I will have problem unless I redigitize the media. Sometimes, its only the media that lost the metadata and sometimes its all of the media in the project.
Let me say that this is occuring on both of my edit systems, one a PPC, the other MacPro. AND, this has only started after the FCP 5.1.2 update, MacOS 10.4.8 update, and Quicktime 7.1.3 update.

I have trashed my preferences. Now, FCP just seems to just close out all on its own from time to time, too. BUT I have noticed that FCP seems to loose my machine control alot. And if you have captured something that uses a serial port and forget to change it to firewire, it will screw up your clips.
It seems like it has something to do with machine control – serial vs firewire.

I agree with Walter completely. We’ve been using Sony’s HDV (the Z1U and the M10U decks). Sony is the most compatable and best for the money.
And by the way…. the Z1U is around $5000 for the basic camera. B&H Photo Video has good prices and I’m sure that you could find a used one for a better price if you look around. Check out the Cows Classified forum on one of these.

When you export directly to Compressor you mpeg stream will be made up of ‘I’,’P’&’B’ frames; you cannot insert chapter markers on anything other than an ‘I’ frame. When you export to Quicktime every single frame is an ‘I’ frame which makes inserting chapter markers a lot easier.”
That’s really odd? I do this all of the time and have never had a problem with Chapter Markers and Compressor.

Well, that’s where you need to have a backup of your system drive on an external firewire device. You can get a copy of Carbon Copier (which is free) and make a close of your system drive on a backup, so if you need to go back for some unknown reason you can. BUT keep in mind that FCP projects are NOT backward compatible.

I wasn’t aware that you could do that… I would have to say that would be a major issue with your problem. That’s kinda like saying that I have this real nice Chevy but I have a Ford engine in it…. Personally, I would have to say that you need to download the correct AJA Kona drivers and install those. After that, render your program using the correct drivers and your problems should go away.

Well…. yeah? But if you are working in the DV codec, you’re defeating your purpose of HDV. The quality of HDV is far superior to DV and the DV codec is a low quality codec unless you are working for DVD only. BUT to answer your question, HDV downconverted to DV is much sharper and overall better quality than regular DV. Besides…. you could purchase a DV camera but why if its the same price or close to HDV.
I know that I’m going to start a pissing match here, but I had to interject my two cents into this discussion.

Do exactly this, if you have multiple formats. In any case, always make sure that your sequence is rendered before outputting to a file. Another thing you could do is render your timeline and use the Export to Compressor feature to output your timeline directly to Compressor, thereby, saving space on your drives by bypassing the export to Quicktime file and then importing that file to Compressor.

Its very easy and it only costs $49 per software set you own. That’s cheap compared to the features available in FCP 5.1 over 5.0.4.

Are you using an AJA Kona SD along with a Blackmagic Decklink card? I wasn’t aware that you could have both cards installed in a system since they do the same things… Or is this just a typo.
