Have I tried everything?! FCP keeps on going to the beachball…forever.
FCP freezes when I try to export a long file. It typically might export 20 of 50Gigs, sometimes less, then the beachball appears and never disappears. It recently froze as I was trying to capture 10gigs of BetaSP.
My system is a Mac G4 dual 1.42 w/2G ram, KONA SD Card w/ BMD decklink v 5.6, FCP 5.0.4, QT 7.1.3, OSX 10.4.8, the latest ATTO drivers.
I have tried erasing the Medea RAID array, I have trashed preferrences (plist in FCP), reinstalled the OS. Even changed my account name & pass word in the MAC. I tried switching back to the original graphic card (NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti) from the ATI card that I had to have to be able to run Apple’s Motion. I ran “RAID patrol” and the Medea Array passed with good speed. The system used to work and worked for 3 years, but for a year I have experienced problems on and off. Now the problems are all the time. It seems like a communication issue, but I don’t know where to start.
No one seems to know what to do…I have been told to buy new stuff, but other than that, can anyone on the Cow at least point me in the right direction? Please.

Are you using an AJA Kona SD along with a Blackmagic Decklink card? I wasn’t aware that you could have both cards installed in a system since they do the same things… Or is this just a typo.

I wasn’t aware that you could do that… I would have to say that would be a major issue with your problem. That’s kinda like saying that I have this real nice Chevy but I have a Ford engine in it…. Personally, I would have to say that you need to download the correct AJA Kona drivers and install those. After that, render your program using the correct drivers and your problems should go away.

Its not a choice that I made. There are no other drivers except the Black Magic drivers. AJA had no trouble selling the card…just supporting the card.
I am not here to go down that particular road, and that is not the problem. Any other suggestions?

this may sound silly.. but always make sure your “caps lock” key is not on.. this can cause problems..

The card is the KONA SD (not the KONA2 or 3) and Blackmagic Decklink drivers are written for the KONA SD. BMD is the company that originally wrote drivers for AJA. AJA only offered, in the past, to upgrade the KONA SD to a new AJA card KONA HD for $1500 with trade-in. I didn’t think that was much of an offer considering the KONA SD sold for $2400. BMD is the only company that writes drivers for KONA SD. AJA sold the card then dropped support similar to the way you would a hot potatoe.
The drivers have worked in the past and are working today. I am having an outout problem though, the hard drive seems to be stressed after communicating for very long on big files. It will just stop. or maybe the beachball spins first. I don’t know if the brake down is from the FCP side or the Medea side. Small stuff seems to not be an issue. Under 10Gigs.
Are there any other suggestions?

Since you tried just about everything it might be a good time to check the RAM. You might have a bad stick. Pull out a few sticks & try to duplicate the problem on the minimum amount of memory. If it continues, swap the sticks still in the machine with ones you pulled out & try it all over again. Process of elimination.
