I agree with Paul…
The only option you have is to figure out where the crash is occuring and then use Quicktime to open the files manually until you find one that is corrupt (probably it will show up as a white screen). Once you find this file, you’ll have to delete it manually and then recapture in FCP. Hopefully, you only have one file that is corrupt.
My eariler suggestion is recapture all of your footage IF you only have a few tapes to deal with. Most of the time when I have had corrupt footage, it was usually more than one clip and searching manually could take more time than just recapturing all of my footage.
Sometimes you get lucky… sometimes you don’t.

The LaCie drives that we HAD were the older style with firewire 400/800 ports only. Most all of them have died. They were somewhere between three and four years old. While I do know that drives don’t last forever, DVDs almost certainly do or at least are more reliable.
Now, we are using the TerraBlock system with Dual-Layer DVDs for backup. Works great!

Sounds like you have a corrupt file in your timeline.
I’d start with deleting all of your render files using the Render Manager. If that still doesn’t do it, you might just need to redigitize your footage because it would mostly likely be a corrupt video file. And when you get done, just export your timeline using your sequence settings to Quicktime and then use Compressor to compress your video to DVD.

After this I select the AJA Kona 3: DVCProHD 1080i 29.97 Easy Setup. Make sure that you change your machine control to Firewire.
Can I ask how you have you M25U deck hooked up? Are you connected via analog component?

Try this…
Export your program into a single Quicktime file. Then import this file into DVDSP. DVDSP can encode also… Its not the best but it does work ok.

Have you rendered the entire timeline before you exported to DVDSP?
Did you adjust any of the settings in Compressor?
From what you say, it sounds like the KB rate was too high for playback.
How long is your project?

I know exactly what you are saying… But my point is that hard drives fail all of the time. You just never know when one will crap out on you, and here’s the biggest problem… if you leave a hard drive on the shelf for any length of time, they will die. I know… we tried to archive something a couple of years ago on a LaCie hard drive and let it set for a few months… the drive is now a door stop and luckily the client is no longer working with us.
Hard drive are also an intermediate device. Just pull one of your old projects off of the shelf and try to use it. I bet you that the drive will not work much more than mounting, if it mounts at all.
I’m not trying to start a flame war, but I am trying to warn and educate people that hard drives are not a long range storage medium, they are short term.

As for your needs and uses for the cameras… P2 would be a viable option for you. BUT I would suggest you looking into a few Blu-Ray disc drives for media backup. I say this because hard drives DO fail. I have one sitting on my desk right now that is only 6 months old. P2 is a neat concept but it can be expensive to run. You might want to look at the possibility of the JVC cameras. They are lower in costs and use tape. Along with the Sony HDV series.
Just do me a favor… Stay away from the expensive Canon HDV cameras. You have to use their cameras as a deck since they don’t have a deck for their tapes.

Let me jump in here…
Ok, Jeremy… what do you use for backup of your P2 media? We use XDCAM HD and I find that paying $30 for a 23 gig disc (that can go onto a shelf after it is used) much better than what $800 for an 8 gig P2 card that has to be reused? I’m not starting any flaming wars… Please understand that. I’m just talking about the cost of P2 that doesn’t make any sense when you put it to paper.
