Well, you don’t really throw it away. You can keep it for backup memory if something should happen OR you can sell it on Ebay.
I understand where you are coming from. Its not a Mac thing but a FCP thing. Its all about performance and the Mac Pro systems are really picky about this. Kinda makes you understand why PCs are so funky. Here, look at this service bulletin from Apple discussing this.

No… no reason at all EXCEPT piece of mind. Something to consider when putting memory into a Mac Pro. You need to have all the memory bars the same size and placed in matching pairs across the risers.
The most important thing is to see if they have a replacement policy or restocking fees if the memory doesn’t work for you.
My suggestion is that you replace the Apple 512s with new 1 gig bars in at least configurations of 4 gig or 8 gig.

Let me jump in here. We’ve been using the XDCAM format for the past two years and I have seen it all with the format.
From my personal experience, I can capture to a G-RAID 500 drive using FW800 and it works absolutely beautiful. But I will say that SATA is absolutely the way to go. My mantra has always been, buy the best you can possibly afford. And in today’s market, SATA drives are equal in price to FW drives.
Now, in terms of workflow… the new FCS2 will make this format absolutely awesome to work with. If you are still using FCS1, and you plan to mix this footage with any other format, then you’d better capture everything to the same codec like DVCProHD. This is what we do at the moment. We have a mixture of HDV and XDCAM HD, which mixes together very well.

And a good capture card would be a great idea also…
The reason I say this is because at the moment you’re not sure what the project is going to be shot on. Why not go ahead and get something like an AJA Kona 3 and have all of your bases covered anytime anybody asks for anything.

Sorry…. digital formats cannot be salvagable if the data is not there.
In the analog world, your tracks could be misaligned and readjusted by move the tracking dial. But in the digital world, tracking doesn’t exsist. Its either there or not. Remember, data is just a set of zeros and ones, and if nothing is there, its not there.
I’m sorry to say that it is lost. I would suggest that you take your camera to a qualified repair center and have them look it over. How long have you had this camera? It may be time to look at a new purchase to save your business.

Sorry…. FCP just doens’t do HDV very well at all. And to add to this, I’m starting to notice there is an issue with new Sony HDV decks and Batch Capture while capturing to HDV.
Most everyone else here doesn’t have these issues because we capture to another codec like DVCProHD. Now that FCS2 is coming out at the end of May, I’m sure that everyone will switch over the the new Apple ProRes 422 codec. You can still use the firewire for machine control but use the component outputs to output your video thru a capture card like the AJA Kona series.
Hopefully after FCS2 gets out on the market, this will all change. We’ll have to see.

16 gig is alot. But do you do alot of Shake? Shake is the only program that will really benefit from more RAM. The others use RAM for various tasks but are not dependent on it like Shake. Everything else uses the GPU.
So…. I’d say stick with 8 gig of RAM and buy the largest and best graphics card you can buy. Motion will thank you for this. By the way, FXplugs uses your graphics card GPU only to work so if you are looking at these plugins – the graphics card is extremely important.

Really…?
We edit 2 shows in a week. A fishing show (13 weeks), a hunting show (26 weeks) and an informational outdoor show (13 weeks) with two editors The later show is a thrid and fourth quarter program. By the way, all of the programs also re-run for 13 – 26 weeks.
