Is the Duel Systems PCMCIA card adapter available in the market now?

    Have you worked with these?

    If so how was it?

    Thanks heaps.

    Hey Gary,

Yes correct there are no PCMCIA/Card Bus Slolts on any Apple-Intel Laptops, that is why I recommended using a PowerbookG4 which does have this slot as opposed to a macbook or macbook pro which do not.

    Thanks.

    Hey,

The Macbook for ingest would be good enough.

You would still need a the P2store as an intermdiate storage/transfer device if you want to have a continous shoot/ingest workflow (otherwise, if you plan to use the camera to read/transfer your P2 cards via firewire – you’ll have to stop the shoot everytime you need to tranfer your files to the mac/FW Raid drive)

My recommendation would be for you to get hold of a PowerBook G4 with the PCMCIA/CardBus Slot. Preferrably a 1.5 Ghz or above.

This way you can just directly insert your P2 card to the PCMCIA slot and transfer your files to your FW Raid without the need for P2 store or having to stop the camera from shooting.

You’ll also need to install the panasonic drivers – if you’re using FC 5.0.4 (not sure if you’ll need to do that for FC 5.1.x)

Oh, you’d also want to watch Shane Ross’s tutorial on P2 capture which you can find in the tutorials section on this great and wonderful site.

    Hope this helps.

October 2, 2006 at 3:09 am in reply to: P2 Cards and Macbook Pro compatibile?

Seems like for people who mainly deal with P2, that it’s better to hang on to their Powerbooks with the PCMCIA/Card Bus Slots until all these ‘coming out soon’ hardware have been released (tested, bug free and with a proven track record)

I wouldn’t think there would be such a great advantage to switch to the new Macbook Pro unles you really need windows. Isn’t this right? Or are there essential things in the Macbook Pros that you can’t do on the Powerbooks?

This leads me to another question – doesn’t this apply to the PowerMac Intel G5s & the Mac Pros? Been hearing a lot of discrepancies with the Mac Pros when it comes to compatibility issues. Seems like it would be wiser to hang on to your current PowerMac Intel G5’s as well, until all these bugs have been fixed.

Hmmmm…… ….looks like apple slipped a little bit with their new hardware.

Or maybe there’s a huge payoff waiting to come out of all this.

Does anyone know of a PCMCIA card reader that connects to a Firewire Port?

This would solve that problem wouldn’t it?

Why would apple take the PC slot anyways?

It was a great little thing to have on the mac laptops especially for us who work in video and film (which I would think is a big portion of their market)

I’m assuming that your 1.67 Powerbook is the 17″ version? Is this correct?
(Coz I think FW800 is only available on them)

How much ram did you have?

    How long was your project?

Did you chain your 2 FW800 drives or did you have a hub/switch to connect them to the powerbook?

Many thanks for the help Shane.

September 23, 2006 at 5:54 am in reply to: HDV Capturing Making it multiple lips

    I’ve had the same problem.

I shot using the Sony Z1, and during capture, Final Cut seems to automatically segment the captured video everytime the record button was pushed (automatic start stop detection).

This is great but I’ve also noticed that Final Cut would skip the first few frames of the video (sometimes even upt to four seconds). So the heads of my clips are missing.

So ther were clips I had to recapture. But funny thing is: what Final Cut Pro captures in terms of the beginning of the clip is like a lottery – it changes each time (sometimes it’s 2 seconds after the clip has started sometimes it 1 second after the clip has started). One thing was consisetent though – It would never capture the first frame of the clip (unlike when editing DV)

I adjusted to this in the shoot by shooting more head room (pre roll) before the action began.

This is ok for controlled shoots but for documentary on-the-fly projects/materials – this could pose a problem.

Has anyone figured why this is happening?

Could it be a camera setting? (The timecode is continous though from the start to the end of the tape -meaning not timecode breaks)
Could it be a setting in Final Cut?

Any help and enlightenment to this would be great. Thanks.

Oh, Smoothe27, you might want to check the heads of your clips – some of them might be missing.

    Cheers.

    Hi!

    Thanks for the responses.

    Graeme:
Where can I get a copy of your software? Is there a website?

Does it turn 29.97 frames to 24p frames, which I can then transfer to 24fps film?

    Thanks a bunch.
