  • Is MacBook OK for P2 ingest in the field

Posted by Herb Sevush on October 19, 2006 at 2:00 am

I have a situation where I have to ingest a few hours of DVCPRO 50 from Panasonic P2 cards in the field. The idea is to ingest to a firewire raid, bring raid back to the office and transfer to Fibre channel raid for editing.

The question is if a new 13″ intel MacBook is enough computer to handle this or do I need to go for a Macbook Pro. Don’t need a large screen for editing, not going to edit on this system, just ingest and then transfer. What say ye?

    Hey,

The Macbook for ingest would be good enough.

You would still need a the P2store as an intermdiate storage/transfer device if you want to have a continous shoot/ingest workflow (otherwise, if you plan to use the camera to read/transfer your P2 cards via firewire – you’ll have to stop the shoot everytime you need to tranfer your files to the mac/FW Raid drive)

My recommendation would be for you to get hold of a PowerBook G4 with the PCMCIA/CardBus Slot. Preferrably a 1.5 Ghz or above.

This way you can just directly insert your P2 card to the PCMCIA slot and transfer your files to your FW Raid without the need for P2 store or having to stop the camera from shooting.

You’ll also need to install the panasonic drivers – if you’re using FC 5.0.4 (not sure if you’ll need to do that for FC 5.1.x)

Oh, you’d also want to watch Shane Ross’s tutorial on P2 capture which you can find in the tutorials section on this great and wonderful site.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Herb,

Probably the most elegant solution for you would be a FireStore FS-100 from Focus Enhancements,
an external hard drive designed specifically with P2 on their mind.

If all you need is to ingest, then this one is for you.

Sorry but there is NOT a PCMCIA slot on any Apple Intel Laptops- you must have either a P2 store or PCD-10 P2 card reader to be able to ingest the footage into a macpro laptop.

    Hey Gary,

Yes correct there are no PCMCIA/Card Bus Slolts on any Apple-Intel Laptops, that is why I recommended using a PowerbookG4 which does have this slot as opposed to a macbook or macbook pro which do not.

    Thanks.
