  • Need some clarification on 1080i/24PA

    Hi!

Does the HVX option too shoot for 1080i/24PA mean that it shoots 1080/60i then converts it on the fly to 1080/24p (full frames progressive) before it records to tape?

If that’s the case – can’t I do the same 1080/60i to 1080/24p conversion via software such as the (DV FILMMAKER)?

Thinking of buying a cam and am choosing between the Z1 and the HVX. The one big thing that attracted me to the HVX was the idea that it could shoot 1080/24p, but if it’s just a conversion that can be done via software with similar or the same results – I would be opting to buy the Z1 since it would be cheaper to buy the camera and the software then the HVX.

Any other things I should consider before choosing?

Your ideas would be a tremendous help. Thanks.

No, the 24PA in 1080i mode on the HVX works exactly as it does on the DVX for DV.
The camera shoots 24 frames per second, and then adds a pulldown before recording it to tape.
Since 1080 DVCPROHD is interlaced only, this is the only way to carry a progressive stream in the codec.
Just like on the DVX, where the camera shoots 24 frames per second, but records it into an interlaced 29.97 sec codec.

This is NOTHING like doing a conversion in software.
You are getting 24 true progressive frames per second, not taking 30 frames per second and trying to retime it.

    Does that make sense?

No, it shoots REAL 24p (unlike the Z1u) then adds 3:2 pulldown to go out to 1080i60, leaving you with a proper looking 24p. Although software like my Film Effects can get close to a 24p look from 60i, and indeed does a hell of a lot better job than the in-built CF24 mode on the Sony, the best way to get 24p is from a camera like the HVX that shoots 24p.

    Hi!

    Thanks for the responses.

    Graeme:
Where can I get a copy of your software? Is there a website?

Does it turn 29.97 frames to 24p frames, which I can then transfer to 24fps film?

    Thanks a bunch.

https://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/GFilmConvert.htm – This is the plugin for FCP, part of my Standards Conversion set.
