Hi Steve,

just out of interest have you installed Mountain Lion?

I’ve had several spinning balls . . . . followed by a crash, situations over the last few days and have put it down to the size of the Event(s) i’m working with at the moment together with the fact that I have installed 10.8 recently.

Fortunately I have yet to lose any work in progress.

So I upgraded to 10.8 and found it the easiest upgrade ever. ( 2008 Quadcore 22GBsRam )

Everything seems to work OK. FCPX solid as a rock. The only thing I’ve noticed is that it seems to take a bit longer to open up.

The bonus is that supporting software such as Telestream Episode works fine. Matrox have released new firmware for the MXO2 mini I run.

As before I forgot to load new drivers for my Esata card and wondered why I couldn’t access my GTech external drives but because I had had this problem before it was quickly resolved.

And as for 10.8 ? Most of the operational features are not for me as I do not use iCloud or Facebook etc etc. The new Safari browser takes some getting used to with the unified address and search field.

Having also installed it on my Macbook Pro ( 2009 ) I’ve had fun with dictating the text for titles and favourites.

So overall a good experience.

And as for speculation.

A lot of people were absolutely convinced that there was going to be a brand new Mac Pro back in June, some even said it was a done deal, but yes it was just speculation!

It’s all just intelligent speculation really.

Speculation driven by the desire to get a load of new features and improved functionality.

Apple dishing the dirt to Larry Jordan was pretty unusual but we will just have to wait and see whether we get everything they mentioned to him in the next update.

What we can be sure of is that whatever is on its way will already be being tested under teutonic NDAs.

I’m presuming you are not talking about a huge number of files. What I would do is simply make a note of the files and re-import them into your core event.

Through using Event Manager X you can then re-open FCPX with just your core event.

You will be notified that you need to re-link missing files and simply navigate to the where you have stored the newly imported files and relink them.

I have just merged 2 large events successfully but as I do not actually import files into FCPX, but reference media drives, so this was quite a simple and relatively quick operation.

What I did was to duplicate an event, trash unwanted file references in the copy, and then merge this with my core event.

Since FCPX has re-introduced file relink, things have got a lot easier and more forgiving.

Transcription of interviews is at the heart of the work we do, so a viable application that aids this process would be welcomed.

I’m of the generation that never learnt to type correctly, and whilst I can fingerpick a guitar pretty effectively I’m defiantly a member of the two finger and a thumb school of typing.

We don’t do a full transcription anymore but rather summarise a statement, sentence or paragraph. So being able to have this summary transcribed within a favourite could actually save quite a lot of time.

Hi Andy – so which bit is faster?

The biggest holdup I have is with rendering out stabilised and treated shots or complex compound builds.

But it might be that with the MBP Retina that this is not necessary.

I would be interested to find out what you plan to connect to your new laptop.

I’m planning to get one soon and have worked out that I’ll need to spend almost as much as the MBP to really take advantage of Thunderbolt and external SSD drives.

But I suppose the biggest question is what is like to work with a a high resolution 15″ screen?

Hi James,

You will probably get a stronger, more opinionated, response over on ‘Apple FCPX or Not: The Debate’.

But for me, yes, I prefer working in FCPX than FCP7 and I just don’t have the mental ability or time to learn yet another program, Premier Pro.

And like you it’s been quite a journey for me too. But the difference in stability and functionality between vers 10.0.1 and 10.0.5 means that a days editing is now far more productive.

Whilst there is a long list of features and fixes I would like to see implemented in FCPX, I really appreciate the thought that has gone into developing the software, the split between organisation and editing and the novelty and flexibility of editing with the magnetic timeline.

I also find the color correction tools deceptively powerful and whilst it’s now possible to round trip to Blackmagic Resolve etc I have found no need to leave the program.

But FCPX elicits a real chalk or cheese response and many people have jumped ship. However some are now returning from adobe land to take a second look.
